  • A man was arrested for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend to death during a domestic dispute.
  • The victim, a young mother, died on Mother's Day.
  • According to the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children, GBV is the result of gender inequality.

A 28-year old Lambert's Bay mother was stabbed to death during a domestic dispute on Mother's Day.

Western Cape police spokesperson, Colonel Andrè  Traut, said a man, in his 30s, stabbed his girlfriend to death in Lang Street, Lambert's Bay, in the Cederberg municipality.

Traut said the man is expected to appear in the Clanwilliam Magistrate's Court once he has been charged.

The Rural and Farmworkers Development Organisation expressed its shock following the brutal murder.

"The small West Coast fishing town of Lamberts Bay is reeling in shock over the attack on yet another woman," the organisation's executive director, Billy Claasen, said.

Classen said the murder, once again, places the spotlight on gender-based violence (GBV) in communities.

He added:

We pray for justice to prevail and for the guilty to be punished.

According to the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children, GBV is the result of gender inequality.

"The causes of GBV are rooted primarily in gender inequality and patriarchy," said the centre's director, Bernadine Bachar.

"Other drivers include socio-economic inequality, unemployment, lack of social support and substance abuse," she added.

Bachar said the centre records approximately 130 survivors of GBV every month.

She encouraged women in abusive relationships to reach out for assistance via the National Shelter Movement's toll-free GBV helpline or the Saartjie Baartman Centre on 021 633 5287.
