Mission accomplished! ULCCS translocates Oxygen plant to hospital

On Sunday, ULCCS completed the job of translocating an entire Oxygen Plant, assigned to it by the District Magistrate of Kozhikode. The 13KL tank from the PK Steel Complex was translocated to the Kozhikode Medical College compound by Sunday noon, said Kishore ULCCS official who is also on the board of national labour co-operative federation NLCF.

Earlier, Kishore had shared information regarding the job of translocating the Oxygen plant, which was carried in these columns. Sunday saw the culmination of the job, stated Kishore.

It took nine days when ULCCS engineers and workers worked day and night, free of cost to save lives, stated a co-operator underlining the true spirit of cooperative movement. The workers worked even on Labour day which was May 1, he added.

Though Kerala is rated among the states where Covid cases are somewhat in check, the district of Kozhikode is one of the worst hits. Its main hospital Kozhikode Medical College Hospital which has facilities of 700 in-patients and 120 ICU beds, needed to have a dedicated supply of oxygen.

It was at this point that ULCCS came into the picture. DM Sambasiva Rao asked ULCCS if it can do it and the answer was yes. Later, after the translocation, the DM and area’s medical officers came to see the re-installation and marvelled at the finesse of the job carried out by the ULCCS team. .

The herculean effort of the ULCCS has earned it kudos from many quarters with the Union Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar tweeting “Great improvisation at work in Kerala as India Fights COVID19”.
Kumar wrote further “Oxygen generating plant at PK Steel Complex being translocated to nearby Kozhikode Medical College and creating additional oxygenated bed capacity. Great work Uralungal Labour Society.”

In the past also, ULCCS activities have been a model for the government. Recently Health and Social Justice Minister K. K. Shailaja lauded its UL Care ‘Madithatt’ telemedicine project in Vadakara to provide online treatment facilities for the elderly by highly skilled doctors across disciplines.

ULCCS concern for its migrant labour is also garnering the media attention. All of its site labour officers have been asked to maintain Covid protocols strictly and help the labours with all the necessary support.

It bears recall that in the list of World Cooperative Monitor report 2020 published by ICA, ULCCS ranked at Second position in the list of sector rankings. In the Industry and Utilities category, ULCCS has been named on the second position, just below Spain based Corporation Mondragon. This ranking is based on the ratio of turnover over gross domestic product (GDP) per capita.
