How a security researcher hacked Apple AirTag
Apple’s most recently launched accessory, which also happens to be its most-affordable gadget, can reportedly be hacked.

According to a German security researcher "Stack Smashing" tweeted about how he managed to “break into the microcontroller of the AirTag.” This enabled him to re-flash the microcontroller that enabled them to modify elements of the item tracker software.

The microcontroller is a key part of the integrated circuit (IC), which is used for controlling devices This essentially means that if a hacker gets access to the microcontroller, then they can control and hold command over what they need the device to do.

In this particular case, the hacker was able to tweak the URL that appears within a notification when an AirTag is enabled in Lost Mode. He also demonstrates that how a non-hacked AirTag redirects to the Find My website, whereas the altered AirTag redirects to an unrelated URL that could lead to phishing, however, the extent of this is unclear at this time.

For now, we will have to wait and see how the Cupertino-based tech giant is able to block this kind of modification.

To recall, AirTag was launched last month at the company’s first event of 2021, where it also launched new iPad and iMac models along with their accessories, a Purple colour variant of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini.

In India, the AirTag costs Rs 3,190 for a single piece and can be bought in packs of four at Rs 10,900.
