Chandigarh, May 9

Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu today targeted Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, claiming the Badal family, and not the Congress, was ruling the state and that the bureaucracy and the police were acting as per the wishes of the Akalis.

Sidhu’s tirade comes in the wake of his recent meetings with some MLAs and a few ministers to mount pressure on the Congress government and fulfil its poll promise of giving justice to families of victims of Kotkapura police firing. Sidhu questioned the CM on the six-month deadline set for the new SIT to finish its task. Sidhu tweeted,

“ The bureaucracy and police act as per the wishes of the Badal family, ignoring our MLAs and party workers.”

The CM chose not to respond, but a government spokesperson said the six-month timeframe for the new SIT was set up by the High Court, not the government. The spokesman said it was clear that the intent of the state government had been misread and misconstrued. The government, the spokesperson said, was committed to ensuring a free and fair investigation into the firing incident.
