Coronavirus Cases in India Today, Coronavirus Statistics in India May 8: For the past 3 days, India has been reporting over 4 lakh new coronavirus infections. On Saturday, India reported 4,01,078 new Covid-19 cases and 4,187 deaths linked to coronavirus complications. Due to heavy caseload, reports of shortage of medical oxygen, hospital beds for Covid patients, and medicines are still coming from various parts of the country.

On Friday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin flagged off a ‘severe crisis’ of medical oxygen in the states. He sought Prime Minister Narendra’s intervention. Tamil Nadu on Saturday announced a statewide complete lockdown for two weeks starting from May 10 in order to limit the spread of Covid-19 in the state. The state on Friday registered its highest single-day spike of 26,465 new Covid-19 cases. The fresh cases take the state’s Covid-19 tally to 13.23 lakh. Tamil Nadu still has 1.35 lakh active Covid-19 cases.

Kerala goes into a statewide nine-day lockdown from today. Several states/UTs in the country are in some form of lockdowns/curfews or following strict Covid-19 restrictions due to the sudden spike of the second wave of Coronavirus infections. The national capital Delhi is under lockdown from April 19 till May 10. With Covid-19 cases continue to spike, Bihar, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Kerala governments, too, have announced complete lockdown.

    Mucormycosis fungal infections up among COVID-19 survivors, warn doctors in Maharashtra, Gujarat

    Cases of mucormycosis, a serious but rare fungal infection, are on the rise among COVID-19 survivors, causing blindness or other serious issues, health officials in Maharashtra and Gujarat said on Saturday. Mathur Savani, chairman of Surat-based Kiran Super Multi-speciality Hospital, said mucormycosis patients are coming to his hospital from many parts of Gujarat.     Delhi Judge sets aside order on release of seized oxygen concentrators to courts, police

    A Delhi Court on Saturday set aside an order directing the distribution of oxygen concentrators seized by the Delhi Police among various courts and police personnel, saying that a judge has to act like a "selfless and dispassionate saint". Principal District and Sessions Judge Narottam Kaushal passed the order on a petition filed by the Delhi government seeking revision of an order passed by a magisterial court. On May 5, Metropolitan Magistrate Anuj Bahal had issued the directions on an application filed by the Delhi Police for release of the seized oxygen concentrators which could be used for saving the lives of police personnel. | Read More

    Coronavirus India Live Update: Rajasthan importing oxygen concentrators from Russia, China; examining proposals from other nations

    Facing a shortage of oxygen amid the rising COVID-19 cases, the Rajasthan government on Saturday said it has started importing oxygen concentrators from Russia and China and plans to purchase more than 28,000 such machines from different countries this month. The first batch of 100 oxygen concentrators arrived here from Russia on Saturday, Health Minister Raghu Sharma said in a statement. The Rajasthan government has taken the lead by making direct contact with foreign countries and arranging oxygen concentrators. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot took the decision on April 30 and a committee for the procurement of oxygen concentrators was set up, he said. The state government will purchase more than 28,000 oxygen concentrators this month, he added. The procurement committee contacted 62 companies from 13 countries in a very short span of time. In about a week's time, the first batch of 100 oxygen concentrators from Russia has been received, Sharma said. (PTI)

    Coronavirus India Live Update: COVID care coaches deployed at 17 stations across seven states, Railways says

    The Railways on Saturday said its isolation coaches to treat mild COVID-19 cases have been deployed at 17 stations across seven states of the country. At present, 298 coaches have been handed over to various states for COVID care with a capacity of over 4,700 beds, it said. A total of 60 coaches have been deployed in Maharashtra where at Nandrubar, 116 admissions were registered with 93 subsequent discharges by state health authorities. A total of 23 patients are utilising the facility, the Railways said. The national transporter has also positioned 11 COVID Care Coaches (with one coach serving exclusively for medical personnel and supplies) at Ajni Inland Container Depot of the state and handed it over to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, it said.     Coronavirus India Live Update: Moscow Olympic gold medallist and former hockey coach MK Kaushik dead

    Former India hockey player and coach M K Kaushik on Saturday died after battling COVID-19 for the past three weeks. He was 66 and survived by his son and wife. Kaushik, a member of the 1980 Moscow Olympics gold-medal winning Indian team, had tested positive for COVID-19 on April 17 and was admitted to a nursing home here. "He was shifted to ventilator this morning but passed away just now," his son Ehsan told PTI. Kaushik had coached both the senior men and women's teams. Under his coaching, India men's team won a gold medal at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok. Also, Indian women team had won bronze medal at the Doha Asian Games in 2006 under his coaching. He was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1998, before being bestowed with the Dronacharya award in 2002. India is battling a devastating second wave of COVID-19 pandemic which is causing 3000 deaths everyday. (PTI)

    Coronavirus India Live Update: SpiceJet airlifts 1,800 oxygen concentrators, COVID relief material from Hong Kong, Nanjing

    SpiceJet said it airlifted 1,800 oxygen concentrators and other relief material from Hong Kong and Nanjing to India on Saturday using its wide-body cargo aircraft. These items were brought to India on two flights, one landing in Delhi and another in Mumbai, it said in a statement. India has been badly hit by the second wave of coronavirus infections and hospitals in several states are reeling under shortage of vaccines, oxygen, drugs, equipment and beds. SpiceJet said it has airlifted more than 15,750 oxygen concentrators from the US, Hong Kong, Singapore and China so far. A record 4,187 COVID-19 fatalities in a day took India's death toll to 2,38,270, while 4,01,078 new infections were reported during the period, pushing the tally of cases to 2,18,92,676, according to Union Health Ministry data on Saturday. Registering a steady increase, active cases have reached 37,23,446 which comprise 17.01 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has dropped to 81.90 per cent, the data updated at 8 am showed.     Coronavirus India Live Update: Eight COVID-19 survivors die of black fungus in Maharashtra, says DMER

    At least eight COVID-19 survivors have died due to mucormycosis, a fungal infection, during treatment in Maharashtra, a senior official said on Saturday, adding the total 200 such patients are being treated. According to Dr Tatyarao Lahane, who heads the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), cases of mucormycosis are on the rise. “Eight out of 200 such patients treated so far in various parts of the state have died due to mucormycosis, also known as a black fungus. They survived COVID-19 infection but the fungal infection attacked their weak immune system which proved fatal,” Dr Lahane told PTI. Niti Aayog Member (Health) V K Paul on Friday said mucormycosis is caused by a fungus named mucor, which is found on wet surfaces.     Coronavirus India Live Update: Kerala logs 41,971 cases, 64 deaths

    Kerala recorded 41,971 fresh cases on Saturday, pushing the COVID-19 caseload to 18,66,827, while the toll mounted to 5,746 with 64 more deaths. Active cases now stood at 4.17 lakh, the state government said. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the state was facing more challenges in the second wave. As many as 27,456 people have been cured, taking the total recoveries to 14,43,633 and presently 4,17,101 people are undergoing treatment in various districts. In the last 24 hours,1,48,546 samples were tested and the Test Positivity Rate (TPR) was 28.25 per cent. So far, 1,69,09,361 samples have been tested, Vijayan told reporters here. While Ernakulam reported 5,492 cases, the highest, three districts accounted for over 4000 cases -- Thiruvananthapuram (4,560), Malappuram(4,558) and Thrissur (4,230). Of the fresh cases, 387 people had come from outside the state and 38,662 were infected through contact, the government said, adding those who tested positive today included 127 health workers.  At least 10,81,007 people are under quarantine in various districts, including30,262 in hospitals. While Ernakulamhas65,856 people undergoing treatment for the virus, Kozhikode has 52,638 and Thrissur 48,718, a government press release said. (PTI)
