Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to become the next chief minister of Assam. Outgoing chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal tendered his resignation to the governor today.
The decision was taken after the newly-elected legislative members of the BJP unanimously chose Sarma as the party's leader in a meeting held today.
Sarbananda Sonowal proposed Sarma's name. Senior leader and union minister Narendra Singh Tomar informed about the decision. He added that the party will soon hold a meeting with its alliance partners.
In the 126-seat assembly, BJP won 60 seats while its alliance partners AGP won 9 seats and UPPL won 6 seats.
Sarma held key portfolios in the outgoing government and had crossed over to BJP from Congress before the 2014 general elections.
Sarma is also the convenor of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) and is considered instrumental in cementing BJP's presence in the region.
