PM pays tributes to Gopal Krishna Gokhale on his birth anniversary

New Delhi, May 9 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid rich tributes to the great freedom fighter Gopal Krishna Gokhale on the latter's birth anniversary.

In a tweet message in Hindi, the Prime Minister said that Gokhale's life, dedicated to the service of the nation, will continue to inspire the countrymen.

Gopal Krishna Gokhale (9 May 1866-February 19, 1915) was an Indian liberal political leader and a social reformer during the Indian Independence Movement. He was was a senior leader of the Indian National Congress and the founder of the ‘Servants of India Society’.

He campaigned for Indian self-rule and for social reforms. He was the leader of the moderate faction of the Congress party that advocated reforms by working with existing government institutions.

Mr Gokhale became a member of the Indian National Congress in 1889, as a protégé of social reformer Mahadev Govind Ranade. Along with other contemporary leaders like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Dadabhai Naoroji, Bipin Chandra Pal, Lala Lajpat Rai and Annie Besant, Mr Gokhale fought for decades to obtain greater political representation and power over public affairs for common Indians.
