NIA takes over probe into seizure of natural uranium worth over Rs 21 Cr in Mumbai

New Delhi, May 9 (UNI) The national anti-terror probe agency NIA on Sunday said that it has taken over the probe into the seizure of natural uranium worth over Rs 21 crore.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) move came after in pursuance of the order of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the agency re-registered the case under section 24(1)(a) of the Atomic Energy Act, 1962.

This case is related to the seizure of 7.1 kgs of ‘Natural Uranium’ having a value of about Rs 21.30 crores from illegal possession of accused persons Jigar Jayesh Pandya and Abu Tahir Afzal Choudhary.

The Maharashtra Anti-terrorism Squad (ATS) on May 5 arrested both Jigar Jayesh Pandya and Abu Tahir Afzal Choudhary with the highly radioactive substance that was trying to sell it.

Acting on a specific tip-off, the Nagpada unit of ATS had apprehended a 27-year-old Thane resident Jigar Pandya with some small pieces of this highly radioactive material.
