‘The baby was taken away from me’

Hyderabad: Popular small screen anchor Hari Teja tested positive for Covid-19 just a week before giving birth. She felt one report turned her life upside down. She was terrified. The 32-year-old mother gives an account of what it is like for a pregnant woman to suffer from the virus.

“I was very careful with my health, especially in the 9th month of pregnancy. Doctors said everything is smooth and there’s nothing to worry about. We were overjoyed and super excited. Just a week before the delivery date, my parents tested positive for Covid-19 and though I had no symptoms, I too got tested. The next day the report came and I was positive too. I couldn’t believe it had happened. I was really worried about my baby. I was unsure of my next move,” she recalls.

Hari Teja had to search for a Covid hospital and in the meantime, several blood tests were done to check the baby’s condition. “Initially, I experienced sleepless nights waiting for the reports and then decided to fight it out and mustered all my strength to stay mentally positive,” says the anchor who gave birth to a Covid negative baby girl in an emergency C-section procedure in a Covid ward.

“The baby was taken away from me as soon as she was born. I was only seeing her through video calls for almost 10 days. It was devastating. But I tried to be strong,” she says. “The whole episode has made me more resolute. The virus has given me the scare of my life, but it has also built me stronger. I want to remind people we can all fight this if we stay at home and stick to the facts,” Hari Teja adds.
