CHENNAI: Shankar Jiwal on Saturday took charge as Chennai city's new police commissioner.
He is a 1990-batch IPS officer hailing from Uttarakhand.
Former police commissioner Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal handed over the charge to Shankar Jiwal at a formal low-key affair at the commissioner’s office in Vepery.
Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal hasn't been assigned any post yet.
Jiwal met chief minister MK Stalin on May 2 and congratulated him for winning the elections.
Earlier, Jiwal worked as the commissioner of police in Tiruchi, Superintendent of police (SP) in special branch CID in the fundamentalist unit.
He also worked as the additional director-general of police of the STF based in Sathyamangalam and armed reserve police chief in the state.
Jiwal was born on August 14, 1965 at Almora city in Uttarakhand. He studied BE in mechanical engineering and pursued his post-graduate diploma course in management.
