Hyderabad: The state government on Saturday sent ten tankers set up with GPS tracking devices to Angul in Odisha to get medical oxygen to meet the requirements of Covid patients in different hospitals in the state. This is in addition to medical oxygen brought along by businesses and other manufacturers.
Of the ten tankers, half a dozen vehicles were sent to Angul by train, while four were flown by Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft, which had already landed at Bhubaneswar airport that evening before reaching Angul by road.
Officials have set up GPS tracking devices to monitor the movement of tankers, each with a capacity of 13 to 20 tons.
The tankers sent by IAF planes will reach the city by road in two days, while the vehicles departing by train from Sanathnagar’s railway line to Odisha will arrive within three days. After the city reaches the city, the tankers will be paid out to hospitals in twin cities to meet patients’ requirements, officials said.
A TSRTC team with a compressor, generator, automatic, mechanical and pneumatic devices to remove and repair tires from tankers arriving by road, accompanies the tanker drivers. The IT department provided the necessary assistance in attaching GPS tracking devices to tankers to monitor the movement of vehicles and reduce the overall time to reach the city.
‘We will be constantly monitoring the movement of tankers through GPS tracking devices. If someone tries to stop the vehicle or divert it to another area, we can take the necessary steps immediately, ‘said K Papa Rao, deputy commissioner for transport. As a precaution, a police escort is provided to the six tankers that will reach Hyderabad by road.
“We take care of the proper supply of oxygen to hospitals from Odisha in cooperation with various departments,” he said. In the past 24 hours, 318 tons of oxygen were brought to Telangana by tankers from outside, in addition to 144 tons of production in the state.
