BENGALURU: Facing a sharp dip in income due to the 14-day curfew in force, many cab and autorickshaw drivers here have demanded the government announce compensation for them. On Tuesday, AAP-led Delhi government announced a financial assistance of Rs 5,000 for auto and taxi drivers since the national capital is under lockdown till May 10. It also offered free ration for two months to 72 lakh ration card holders. The government has announced stringent measures for two weeks from May 10. In May 2020, the state government had announced a compensation of Rs 5,000 each for around 7.5 lakh auto and taxi drivers. Transport department officials said they received 2.4 lakh applications from drivers and disbursed the relief amount to 2.1 lakh applicants. C Sampath, general secretary, Adarsh Autorickshaw Taxi Drivers’ Union, said: “Last year, the government announced a one-time compensation of Rs 5,000, following a move by the Delhi government. But many drivers in Karnataka didn’t get the relief since it was only accessible through the Seva Sindhu portal.” He said the government should make the process hassle-free by sending the amount directly to bank accounts. Many drivers say they are barely making any money due to Covid-related curbs, virus scare and work-from-home arrangement. “People are stepping out only for emergencies in their own vehicles. We’re allowed to ply only till noon and can ferry only essential staff and those headed to hospitals. The government should provide us some relief,” said K Manjunath, an auto driver. K Somashekar, leader, Namma Chalakkara Trade Union, said many cab drives are struggling to pay vehicle EMI and monthly rent. “Around 150 taxi drivers in the city are now driving ambulances since there is no demand for cabs. Some consider it a service.” Tanveer Pasha, a cab union leader, said: “Police have been harassing cab drivers providing emergency services, including airport pick-ups and hospital trips. Many are working as ambulance drivers and risking their lives.”
