Ghaziabad: Two government hospitals in the district will have their own oxygen plants in the next couple of weeks, officials have said.
While Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has decided to install a plant for the District Combined Hospital as part of its corporate social responsibility, state health minister Atul Garg has donated Rs 50 lakh to set up a plant and procure oxygen concentrators at MMG District Hospital, a non-Covid facility.
The two plants will together be able to provide continuous oxygen supply to 70-80 beds, officials said.
On Wednesday, a team from BEL visited the District Combined Hospital, a 100-bed L2 facility, to earmark the place for the plant. The chief medical superintendent at the hospital, Dr Sanjay Teotia, said: “The company representatives have assured us that the plant will be up and running in the next 10 days. According to them, the plant will be capable of supplying oxygen to about 30 beds continuously. Once ready, it will reduce our dependence on oxygen cylinders from outside. Currently, 35-40 patients are on oxygen support on a daily basis.”
An oxygen plant had been installed at the hospital five-six years ago by a Lucknow-based company. It worked for about three years and has been lying defunct since then.
For the past few months, Teotia said, they have been trying to revive the facility and the firm from Lucknow had recently sent its representatives for an inspection. But it was found that the plant cannot be revived now.
Dr Teotia said the new plant will cost around Rs 30 lakh and it would be installed right next to the defunct facility.
MMG District Hospital, the largest government facility in Ghaziabad with over 150 beds, is a non-Covid unit. The hospital caters to patients with emergencies and critical ailments. According to officials, with the Rs 50 lakhs donated by the minister, several oxygen concentrators would be bought soon. The oxygen plant that would be installed in the next few weeks will provide oxygen supply to around 50 beds, said an official.
Apart from the District Combined Hospital and MMG District Hospital, the other prominent government facility in the district is the District Womens’ Hospital.
