KCR rules out lockdown in Telangana
- Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao (KCR) on Thursday clarified that lockdown would not be imposed in the state as it would bring life to a standstill and lead to the total collapse of the financial system.
- Rao took this decision after examining states where lockdowns were in place and positive cases did not come down, along with past experiences.
COVID-19: Six US planes carrying medical supplies reached India in past few days
- The US has so far sent six planes carrying emergency supplies to India, which is battling one of its worst public health crises.
- The emergency supplies include 20,000 courses of remdesivir (125,000 vials) to help treat critically ill patients, nearly 1,500 oxygen cylinders, which can be repeatedly refilled at local supply centres, and one million rapid diagnostic tests to quickly identify COVID-19 cases.
- The six planes, which have landed in just six days, also carried nearly 550 mobile oxygen concentrators that obtain oxygen from ambient air. These units have a lifespan of more than five years and can serve multiple patients at once, depending on their oxygen needs.
- The US has also sent nearly 2.5 million N95 masks to protect healthcare professionals and other frontline workers.
Flash floods in Afghanistan claim 50 lives
- As many as 50 people were killed in Afghanistan due to flash floods caused by heavy rainfall in several provinces, reported Afghanistan Times on Wednesday.
- "Following the heavy rainfall, waves of muddy water engulfed 17 provinces, which killed 50 people," said Tamim Azimi, spokesman for State Ministry for National Disaster Management (SMNDM).
- As per the spokesman, 15 people are missing and six others received injuries, reported Afghanistan Times.
Netherlands first shipment of COVID relief material lands in India
The first shipment containing 449 ventilators, 100 oxygen concentrators and other medical supplies from the Netherlands arrived in India on Friday as a part of humanitarian assistance to India in its fight against rising COVID-19 cases.
COVID-19: Rajasthan imposes lockdown from May 10 to 24
- The Rajasthan government on Thursday announced a state-wide lockdown from May 10 to 24 in light of the rapidly increasing COVID-19 cases.
- As per the order, marriages will only be allowed after May 31. Any function related to weddings will not be permitted till May 31. Court weddings and small weddings at home with not more than 11 attendants will be permitted.
- Religious places will remain closed, and people are requested to carry out religious activities at home during the lockdown. Medical departments will issue separate guidelines regarding attendants caring for hospitalised COVID-19 patients.
