Kanpur: An ambulance
driver was booked by city police on Wednesday for charging Rs 2,500 to ferry the body of a Covid patient to the cremation ground.
The patient Lalit Mishra was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city where he died on Wednesday. His family contacted an ambulance driver to ferry his body to the cremation site.
The ambulance driver Bablu charged Rs 2,500 from the family of the deceased, even though the local administration has made arrangement for free transportation of dead bodies to cremation site in the time of pandemic.
ADM (supply) Dr Basant Agarwal said, a family member of the deceased Saurabh Mishra alerted the Covid nodal officer who lodged an FIR against the ambulance driver at Gwaltoli police station.
“During investigation, the charges were found to be true. Subsequently, the nodal officer lodged an FIR at Gwaltoli police station against the ambulance driver,” said Agarwal.
Earlier, on April 26, police had arrested an ambulance driver for charging high fare to transport a Covid patient’s body to cremation site.
