  • An 18-year-old girl has been accused of conspiring to murder her former boyfriend who allegedly assaulted their baby.
  • It is alleged the teen tried to hire a prisoner to kill the 28-year-old man who was in custody at Kgosi Mampuru II Prison at the time.
  • According to the State, the father allegedly assaulted the four-month-old baby so badly that he had a broken femur and ribs.

The case against a teenage girl from Pretoria, who stands accused of conspiring to murder her former boyfriend after he allegedly assaulted their baby, has been postponed after her legal representative failed to appear in court.

The 18-year-old woman, who cannot be named to protect the baby's identity, briefly appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

The accused's lawyer was, however, not in court and the case had to be postponed. It was previously postponed for the disclosure of the docket. Once it has been disclosed, it can be set down for trial.

Last November, News24 reported the accused was arrested for allegedly attempting to hire a prisoner to kill the father of her four-month-old baby.

According to the charge sheet, which News24 has seen, on 9 November, the mother allegedly attempted to procure the services of a "gang member" in Kgosi Mampuru II Prison.

She has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

Previously, she was released on R1 000 bail after the State did not oppose her release.

Severe assault

Meanwhile, the father of the victim, known as Baby M, was arrested in October last year and was in custody in Kgosi Mampuru II until he was granted bail in February.

It is alleged the 28-year-old man, who also cannot be named to protect the victim's identity, attacked Baby M, as well as the child's mother, during a domestic dispute in their Sunnyside apartment.

Baby M was rushed to hospital, where it was discovered the infant had suffered broken ribs and femur.

The father has since been charged with attempted murder.

He was initially charged with assault with the intention to do grievous bodily harm, but additional charges have since been added.
