Odisha reports a record 10521 new covid cases,17 fatalities in a single day

Bhubaneswar, May 6 (UNI) Notwithstanding a complete 14 days lock down in Odisha, the new covid cases and fatalities in the state have shown a steady rise.
Health and Family Welfare department sources said in the past 24 hours,the covid infection in the state surged to a record 10521 cases while the death toll also registered a record of 17 fatalities.
For the second time in a week the daily covid cases surpassed 10 K as earlier on April 30, odisha reported 10143 new cases.
With the sharp rise of covid cases the tally in the state today crossed five lakh mark to reach 5,00,162 while the covid death toll rose to 2121 with fresh death of 17 covid patients under treatment in the past 24 hours.
Official sources said so far 4,16,403 covid patients have been recovered in the state with the recovery of 6176 people on Wednesday.
The active cases in Odisha has gone up to 81,585.
Out of 10521 new cases reported in the state in the past 24hours,5945 were found from the quarantine centres and 4576 are local contact cases.
As many as eleven districts have reported more than 300 cases in a single day and Khordha continued to be in the top with 1477 cases followed by Sundargarh (1186),Cuttack (963),Kalahandi ( 571),Bargarh ( 543) and Sambalpur( 460 ).
Sources said khordha district has been registering over 1000 cases during the week and a majority of them reported from the Capital city of Bhubaneswar.
On the other hand, Sundargarh remained the second position with over 1000 cases being reported for the second consecutive day today.
After Khordha and Sundargarh district, the coastal district of Cuttack also witnessed sharp rise in the covid cases.The covid positive cases had jumped from a little over 500 during the last week to 963 in the past 24 hours.
Meanwhile, 17 new covid fatalities were reported from 12 district in the state in the past 24 hours with Khordha registering the highest number of four followed by two each in Balasore and Malkangiri district and one each in the rest nine districts.
Life in the state remained paralysed for the second day today due to complete 14 days lock down announced by the state government to contain the spread of the virus.
Besides,the lock down,the state had also imposed a complete weekend shutdown on every Saturday and Sunday.
The shortage of covid vaccines has upset the inoculation drive across the state with as many as 1408 centres found closed yesterday.No vaccination was carried out in 15 of the 30 districts in the state on Wednesday.
With the lock down in force panic buying has led to the skyrocketing of potato price in the state.Potato which was available at Rs.18 to Rs20 per kg has gone up to Rs.40 per kg and at many places it has vanished from the market.
State Food Supply minister R P Swain has appealed to the people not to resort to panic buying stating that the state has enough stock to feed.
The state government has also allowed relaxation during the lock down from 6 AM to 12 PM to purchase grocery and vegetables from the nearby places by walking.
The State Government has asked all District Collectors, Municipal Commissioners to ensure vaccination of working journalists at the earliest after they were declared as frontline Covid Warriors by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in the battle against 2nd wave of COVID-19 .
