Drug peddler arrested in Bandipora; contraband recovered

Srinagar, May 6 (UNI) Police on Thursday arrested drug peddler and recovered contraband from him in north Kashmir district of Bandipora.

Meanwhile, poppy cultivation spread over 8 kanals of land was destroyed in south Kashmir district of Kulgam.

A police spokesperson said that following specific information, a checkpoint was established at Shadipora in Bandipora. ''Police intercepted a person at the checkpoint and during checking recovered 40 bottles of codeine phosphate (100 ML each) and 576 banned Capsules from him,'' he said.

He said the accused, identified as Mohammad Younis Malla, was immediately taken into custody. ''Accordingly, a case FIR No. 55/2021 under relevant sections of law was registered in Police Station Sumbal and further investigation has been taken up,'' he said.

He said acting on specific information about cultivation of poppy, a police party along with Executive Magistrate destroyed the poppy cultivation spread over nearly about eight Kanals of land in village Pooniwa and its adjacent areas in Kulgam.

He said community members are requested to come forward with any information regarding drug peddlers in their neighbourhood, adding persons found indulging in drug peddling will be dealt as per law.
''Our consistent actions against drug peddlers should reassure the community members that we are making efforts to keep our society free from the scourge of drug menace,'' he added.
