Coronavirus News Live Updates: New coronavirus cases and deaths in India hit a record daily high with 4,12,262 new infections and 3,980 fatalities being reported, taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to2,10,77,410and the death toll to2,30,168, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday. Registering a steady increase, the active cases have increased to 35,66,398 comprising 16.92 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has dropped to 81.99 per cent, the data updated at 8 am showed.
The Kerala government on Thursday announced a complete lockdown in the state from May 8 morning in view of the severe COVID-19 surge in the second wave of the pandemic. The 9-day-lockdown would come into force on May 8 morning and extend up to May 16, according to official sources.

Chhattisgarh Govt Suspends COVID-19 Vaccination for 18-44 Age Group | The Chhattisgarh government has suspended the third phase of COVID-19 vaccination drive for people aged 18 to 44, after the high court's order to modify the plan that prioritised inoculation of the economically weaker sections of society, an official said on Thursday. The state government has constituted a committee headed by the state's chief secretary to finalise a fresh plan to distribute vaccines in the third phase in an equitable manner, the public relations department official said.

Corona Curfew in Three Uttarakhand Districts Extended Till May 10 | In view of the fresh surge in Covid-19 cases, curfew has been extended in the three heavy caseload districts of Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar in Uttarakhand till May 10. The district magistrates of Dehradun, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar are directed to enforce the curfew throughout the district from May 6 to May 10 (till 5 am), Chief Secretary, Om Prakash, said in an order.
Defence Minister's Response on Covid-19 Surge | Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said he has directed the Armed Forces to extend all possible assistance to the civil administration to tide over the crisis. "Emergency Financial Powers were granted to the Armed Forces so that Formation Commanders can establish and operate quarantine facilities/hospitals and undertake procurement/repair of equipment/items/material/stores," he said in a statement.

3,000 Oxygen Concentrators Dispatched, No Pendency with Customs: Centre | The Union Health Ministry on Thursday said no oxygen concentrator, received as aid from abroad, is lying with the customs authorities at any port of import as these consignments are being cleared swiftly, the Union health ministry said on Thursday. In all, 3,000 oxygen concentrators have been received as global aid to support the Central government's efforts and that of the states and Union Territories in their collective fight against the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, it said in a statement.

Covid Spreading in Rural India; Record Daily Rises in Cases | India reported a record 412,262 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday and a record 3,980 daily death toll, as a second wave of infections swamps the health system and spreads from cities into the vast countryside. With hospitals scrabbling for beds and oxygen in response to the surge in infections, the World Health Organization said in a weekly report that India accounted for nearly half the coronavirus cases reported worldwide last week and a quarter of the deaths.
17.15 Crore Vaccine Doses Given to States for Free | The Centre has so far provided more than 17.15 crore vaccine doses to States and UTs for free. More than 89 lakh doses are still available with the States and UTs to be administered. The centre will send over 28 lakh more doses to the States in the next 3 days.

Telangana Reports 6,026 New COVID-19 Cases, 52 Deaths | Telangana reported 6,026 fresh COVID-19 cases taking the tally to over 4.75 lakh while the toll stood at2,579 with 52 more casualties on Thursday. The silver lining is that the recoveries outnumbered fresh infections for the fourth consecutive day thus reducing overall positive cases in the state. From May 1, the total number of fresh positive cases stood at 32,394 while the recoveries were at 33,884. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 1115, followed by Medchal Malkajgiri (418) and Rangareddy (403), a government bulletin said, providing details as of 8 PM on May 5.
Ajit Singh, Former Union Minister and RLD Chief, Dies of Covid | Former Union minister and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leader Ajit Singh passed away at a Gurgaon hospital on Thursday morning battling COVID-19, his family said. He was 82. Singh, the son of former prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, was diagnosed positive for COVID-19 on April 20, the family said in a statement.
3,017 New COVID-19 Cases in Thane, 53 More Deaths | With the addition of 3,017 new cases of coronavirus, the infection count in Thane district of Maharashtra has gone up to 4,80,194, an official said on Thursday. These new cases were reported on Wednesday, he said. The virus also claimed the lives of 53 more people, pushing the death toll in the district to 7,833, the official said. The COVID-19 mortality rate in Thane stood at 1.63 per cent, he added. Details of recovered and under-treatment patients were not provided by the district administration.

Over 16.24 Cr Covid Vaccine Doses Administered in India | The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country so far stands at 16,24,30,828, the health ministry said on Wednesday. It said 2,30,305 beneficiaries in the 18-44 age group received the first dose of the vaccine on Wednesday across 12 states and Union territories. The total number of people in this age group who have been inoculated against the viral disease stands at 9,02,731, the ministry said. The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country stands at 16,24,30,828, according to a provisional report compiled at 8 pm.
Spain Finds 11 Cases of Variant First Identified in India | Spain's health minister says the European country has detected 11 cases of the new strain of the coronavirus first identified in India. Minister Carolina Darias says the cases were two separate outbreaks discovered by health officials in recent days. She added a plane carrying medical supplies, including oxygen and breathing machines, for hard-hit India will leave on Thursday. Last week, Spain's government approved a shipment of seven tons of medical supplies to help India combat it surging wave of infections.
