New Delhi: The IPL, who was recently suspended, witnessed potential corrupters who plugged an accredited cleaner at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi for doing ‘pitch-siding’, which helps the ball-to-ball commitment, the head of the BCCI anti-corruption unit, Shabbir Hussain Shekhadam Khandwawala, unveiled.
The new modus operandi was observed during one of the IPL games in New Delhi, where a designated cleaner used the time lapse between actual match action and live TV coverage to help with ball-for-ball betting, also known as stands as a court strip or stand.
Pitch side tracks are used to convey information of sporting events for gambling or to place bets directly.
‘One of my ACU officers caught a person and handed over the details to the Delhi police. “While the specific offender was able to escape and leave his two cellphones behind, ACU has lodged a complaint with Delhi police,” Hussain, a former director of Gujarat police, said on Wednesday.
“We are grateful to the Delhi police for intercepting two other Kotla people on ACU tip in a separate incident.”
Delhi police arrested two people with fake accreditation tickets on May 2 during the IPL match between Rajasthan Royals and SunRisers Hyderabad.
‘On two separate days, therefore, these people gained access to Kotla. The one who fled came in a cleaner’s robe. However, we have all his information as he was employed for the tournament. “His Aadhar card details were handed over to Delhi police,” Hussain said.
“I’m confident he’ll be caught in a day or two. “He’s a little braai who works for a few hundred or a thousand dollars,” the ACU supremo said.
