Scranton man sentenced for role in 2019 shooting

May 4—A Scranton man was sentenced Tuesday to 11 1/2 to 23 years in state prison for being an accomplice to attempted homicide and a probation violation on a prior conviction.

Calvin Friday, 24, pleaded guilty in January 2020 for his role in the 2019 home invasion that resulted in Brandon Newsome being shot twice.

According to an arrest affidavit, Friday and two accomplices, Devante Herbert Graham and Chelsea Gillette, were looking to rob someone. Gillette contacted Newsome to purchase marijuana at his Hawthorne Street home in Scranton. Gillette left the door ajar and Friday and Graham barged in. A struggle ensued and Graham shot Newsome in the face and thigh.

Graham, 26, of Scranton, is charged with attempted homicide, robbery, aggravated assault and several other offenses, while Gillette, 25, of Scranton, is charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and several related offenses. Both cases remain pending.

Lackawanna County Judge Michael Barrasse sentenced Friday to 10 to 20 years in prison for the attempted homicide as an accomplice charge. Barrasse also sentenced Friday to an additional 18 to 36 months for violating his probation for a 2015 conviction of theft from a motor vehicle and carrying a firearm without a license.
