Dilip Chhabria, the popular car design czar in India has got bail in a case filed by Economic Offences Wing (EOW). Dilip Chhabria was arrested in multiple cases and one of them was the Rs 22 crore cheating case. A sessions court has granted bail to the designer and has stated that any attempt the delay the trial would be considered as a ground to cancel the relief or the bail.
The court bail order said that Dilip Chhabria must cooperate with the court for the expeditious or quick disposal of the case. The bail set by the court is a cash amount of Rs 2 lakh. The court has also directed Chhabria to attend the EOW office, where the complaint is registered, as and when required by the investigating officer.
The session court has also ordered the 66-year old from leaving the country. If Dilip Chhabria wants to go overseas, he will have to seek permission from the court or have to contact the informant or anyone connected with the case.
Chhabria’s lawyer Sejal Yadav earlier argued in a plea informing the court that two co-accused in the case – Chhabria’s son Bonito Chhabria and daughter-in-law Anushree Chhabria have already got anticipatory bail in the case. It was also argued that the case is a civil matter between the informant and Chhabria. The EOW should not be dragged into a civil dispute.
Family members booked
Apart from Dilip Chhabria’s son and his daughter-in-law, other family members are also involved in the case. Two other family members of the car designer were booked in the case including his wife – Cherry Chhabria and his sister Kanchan.
Chhabria approached the court on 7th April 2021 seeking bail. He was arrested in early February in the case. An automobile spare parts dealer Indermal Ramani had originally approached the EOW with the complaint against Chhabria. In the complaint, he had told EOW that Chhabria owed him Rs 18 crore for a consignment of spare parts. Ramani had also alleged that Chhabria had taken a loan from him for an investment.
Dual registration case
Before that, the Mumbai Police city crime branch had booked Chhabria for car financing and a dual registration racket. Even the popular comedian Kapil Sharma filed a complaint against Chhabria alleging that he took Rs 5.3 crore from him in 2017 on the pretext of designing and delivering a vanity van. However, Chhabria failed to do that and asked for more money as parking charges among other things.
Earlier in April, Chhabria was granted bail in the multi-crore forgery scam which is estimated to be around Rs 40 crore. However, he remained in jail because of the other cases. Dilip Chhabria was first arrested on December 29 last year in connection with the car financing and dual registration racket. He was sent to the Taloja Jail on January 7. He was again arrested by the cops after Kapil Sharma lodged an FIR against Dilip Chhabria. The CIU got custody of Chhabria only for a few days before he was sent back to judicial custody.
Currently, there are three cases against the celebrity car designer. There are two cases against him by CIU and one by the Economic Offences Wing of Mumbai Police.
