Kolkata, May 4 (UNI) West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday said police must end senseless political violence, vandalism, arson, killings and intimidation that shames democracy.
Taking to his twitter handle, Mr Dhankhar said, Police @WBPolice @CPKolkata must end senseless political violence, vandalism, arson, killings and intimidation that shames democracy.”.
“Bengali diaspora world over has expressed concern over alarming lawlessness. Why post-poll violence only WB ? Why this assault on democracy? The governor questioned.
He said, “Reports indicate horrendous state of affairs. Horrified people are fleeing to save themselves. Flooded with SOS appeals.”
“Harmads are on killing and destruction spree. Such nosediving of constitutional values cannot be countenanced. Call upon @MamataOfficial to restore order,” Mr Dhankhar added.
The governor on Monday night said it is unfortunate that many lives have been lost, several injured, houses torched in the post-poll violence.
He said, "During our more than an hour interaction @MamataOfficial my primary focus was that the Government takes all steps to ensure the post-poll violence, arson, loot and killings end. Unfortunately, many lives have been lost, several injured, houses torched in this violence."
“Was constrained to summon ACS @HomeBengal DGP @WBPolice Police Commissioner @CPKolkata in wake of post-poll violence & vandalism resulting in killings, injuries & destruction of shops and houses. All were called upon to submit the report urgently. Unfortunate no report thus far,’ Mr Dhankhar said.
“Both DGP @WBPolice and CP @CPKolkata have informed that they had sent their reports as sought by me to ACS Home @HomeBengal. Cannot figure out why ACS Home has not forwarded to me these when violence continues unabated & there are concerns over it in Country and even outside,” the governor said.
ACS Home @HomeBengal who was called by me in wake of rising post-poll violence in the State has been directed to submit a report on post-poll violence and vandalism in State & steps taken. He has been urged to take all possible measures to ensure accountability of officials concerned,” he said.

"BJP National President Shri @JPNadda will be visiting West Bengal on 4-5May, in view of the widespread post results, retributive violence unleashed on BJP workers and supporters by criminal elements in the TMC cadre. He will be visiting families of the affected karyakartas," the BJP said in a tweet.
The party has also announced to hold a nationwide dharna on May 5 while following all Covid protocols across all organisational mandals of the party. The party will organise protests against the alleged atrocities on party workers by the TMC.
"The BJP has announced a nationwide dharna on 5th May against the widespread violence unleashed by TMC workers post the election results in West Bengal. This protest will be held following all Covid protocols across all organisational mandals of the BJP," the party tweeted
"Within 24 hours of election results, many BJP workers have been murdered. Many workers are seriously injured. The house and shops of many party workers have also been burnt. After Mamata Banerjee's defeat and Trinamool Congress' victory in the election results yesterday, the TMC hooligans started celebrating the victory with violence and blood. BJP condemns this," a statement from the BJP said.
