SILCHAR, May 3: Counting of votes was concluded peacefully in Cachar district, for the seven assembly constituency seats, out of which 4 were won by BJP candidates, 2 by Congress candidates and one by AIUDF candidate.
At Silchar constituency, BJP candidate Dipayan Chakrabarty took the winning cup after securing 98,558 votes and defeating Congress’s Tamal Kanti Banik who polled 60,980 votes. As per final figures, the total number of votes cast in the constituency was 1,74,621 where 1,379 went to NOTA.
At Katigorah Constituency, INC candidate Khalil Uddin Mazumder defeated BJP candidate Gautom Roy by a margin of 6,939 votes. Mazumder polled 83,268 votes while his rival Roy polled 76,329 votes. Total number of votes cast in the constituency was 1,88,677 where 1,112 went to NOTA.
At Dholai Constituency, BJP candidate Parimal Sukhlabaidya swept the election with a margin of 20,392 votes and defeated Kamakhya Prasad Mala, who polled 62,176 votes. Sukhlabaidya polled 82,568 votes. Total number of valid votes cast in the constituency was 1,48,490 where 1,561 went to NOTA.
BJP Candidate Mihir Kanti Shome won from Udharbond constituency by defeating his arch rival Ajit Singh. Mihir Kanti Shome polled 61,745 votes whereas Ajit Singh of INC polled 59,060 votes. Total number of valid votes cast in the constituency was 1,28,947 where 1,494 went to NOTA.
In Sonai LAC, AIUDF candidate Karim Uddin Barbhuiya defeated his nearest rival BJP’s Aminul Haque Laskar by a huge margin of 19,654 votes. Barbhuiya polled 71,937 votes while his nearest rival Laskargot 52,283 votes. Independent candidate, Ashish Halder bagged 14,500 votes. Total number of valid votes cast in the constituency was 1,46,103 where 1,231 went to NOTA.
From Lakhipur constituency, BJP candidate Kaushik Rai registered the victory after gaining 55,341 votes. His nearest rival Mukesh Pandey from INC bagged 42,641 votes. Total number of valid votes cast in the constituency was 1,22,510 where 1,536 went to NOTA.
From Borkhola constituency, INC candidate Misbahul Islam Laskar won the seat with 64,433 and defeating BJP’s Amalendu Das, who bagged 57,402 votes. Total number of valid votes cast in the constituency was 1,23,349 where 1,105 went to NOTA.
Polling went off smoothly with tight security thrown in and around the NATRIP counting centre. Cachar SP earlier mentioned that three tier security arrangements were provided at the counting centre with the inner one with central reserve force. Counting started on the dot 8 am with counting of postal ballots.
The administration clamped Section 144 to prevent the assembling of five or more persons and banned victory procession in the entire district due to Covid pandemic situation.
