Salem Municipal Corporation (
SMC) commissioner N Ravichandran on Tuesday imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on a private hospital near Seelanaickenpatty for not disposing of medical waste properly.
He warned that strict action would be initiated if the hospital management failed to dispose of the medical waste as per the state government guidelines.
Ravichandran told TOI that the SMC officials collected a fine f Rs 1.08 lakh on Monday and Tuesday, excluding the hospital fine. “We have collected a fine of Rs 200 each from 121 people for not wearing masks, Rs 500 each from 38 shops for not insisting the customers to maintain the social distancing and Rs 5,000 each from 13 big shops including the grocery shops, departmental store and a textile shops,” he said.
The corporation commissioner also asked the shop owners to insist their customers to cover their faces with masks and also to maintain social distancing. “Shop owners should provide hand sanitizers to their customers while they are entering the premises,” he stated.
