Class-I woman official among 2 arrested for graft

Thane, May 4 (UNI) Two people, including a Class-I official of the Woman & Child Development Department and an accountant, were arrested on Tuesday by the Thane Range of Anti-Corruption Bureau while allegedly accepting Rs one lakh as first installment of a bribe from a contractor.
The official had demanded Rs 4.10 lakh as bribe from the contractor who had supplied food items to the hostels of the department at Karjat and Kolad, for sanctioning his bills, official sources said.
However, aggrieved contractor lodged a complaint with the Raigad unit of ACB, whose team today laid a trap and caught the duo while accepting the first installment of Rs one lakh from the complainant.
The officer asked the complainant to keep the bribe money on the table which was picked up by the accountant and handed over to the officer.
The arrested accused were identified as Ujjwala Patil, District Women & Child Development officer, Raigad, Alibag (Class-I), and Bushan Ghare, District Child Protection Unit, (accountant, Contract).
An offence under Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered with the local police station against the duo.
Further probe into the crime is on, it was stated.
