India surpassed 400,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in a 24-hour period for the first time on Saturday, marking yet another global daily infection record. The country recorded 3,523 deaths during the same span, which experts believe to be an undercount, Al Jazeera reports. Additionally, a fire broke out in a COVID-19 hospital ward in western India, reportedly killing 16 patients and two staff members. As the surge worsens, several countries, including the United States, have restricted travel from India. The U.S., which has also been delivering pandemic-related supplies to the country, will officially implement the travel ban on May 4 "in light of extraordinarily high COVID-19 caseloads and multiple variants circulating" there, the White House confirmed Friday. The policy won't apply to American citizens, lawful permanent residents, or others with exemptions, nor will it apply to humanitarian workers. The White House said the administration was taking this step based on advice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, though former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb told CNBC on Friday that the move likely won't affect the U.S.'s coronavirus trajectory, which he's generally optimistic about. "It's probably going to do more harm to India than any good that it attributes to us," Gottlieb said, adding that a highly contagious variant first identified in India is already circulating in the U.S. and "the best way to reduce the risk of that variant is, frankly, to get more Americans vaccinated ... not restricting travel at this point." BROADCAST AND DIGITAL RESTRICTIONS~**Broadcasters: NO USE INDIA Digital: NO USE INDIA.India hit a new grim milestone Saturday: daily new COVID-19 cases topped 400,000 for the first time. The second wave is worsening rapidly. India has already recorded more than 300,000 daily cases for 10 straight days. Some experts blame mass religious gatherings and political rallies for the severity of the wave. More than 3,500 people have died in just the past 24 hours. Hospitals, morgues and crematoriums are overwhelmed. One hospital in central India lacks basic medical equipment in working condition.Families are scrambling for oxygen and scarce medicines. Ashok Shukla’s mother is a patient here. Her oxygen levels have dropped.“I went downstairs at the hospital, but they said they won’t be able to give me any oxygen cylinder because they don’t have it, either.” India is the world’s biggest producer of COVID-19 vaccines. But shortages of the shots in some states have hindered its vaccination drive for all adults. A growing number of countries has imposed travel restrictions. U.S. President Joe Biden on Friday banned most travel from India; those restrictions take effect on Tuesday.
Grant Stinchfield gets a bit prickly over the president’s sweet gesture Newsmax anchor Grant Stinchfield’s irritation with President Biden looks to be in full bloom, after the commander-in-chief took a moment to pick a dandelion for First Lady Jill Biden before boarding Marine One on Thursday. The picture went viral on Twitter soon after, with many users (and news outlets) viewing it as a heartwarming gesture. Stinchfield wasn’t one of them, though, and he even went as far as to suggest the dandelion was “planted” while on air. “He picks up the weed and gives it to Jill in what I guess is supposed to be some kind of a sweet gesture,” Stinchfield said. “I say it was a planted dandelion there. Who knows?” He’s not a huge fan of dandelions, either. Stinchfield said, “You blow it, it goes everywhere and then everybody starts sneezing.” Perhaps he’s more of a sunflower or roses kind of guy. Newsmax and Stinchfield may not have loved it, but other outlets weren’t as critical. NowThis tweeted it was a “sweet gesture,” complete with an accompanying smiley emoji. Reuters tweeted Biden was “ever the romantic” for it, and Washington Post reporter Matt Viser complimented his colleague Demetrius Freeman for snapping pictures, tweeting “quite the captures.” You can judge President Biden’s dandelion-picking ability for yourself below, via C-SPAN: President Biden stops and picks a dandelion for First Lady Dr. Jill Biden as they board Marine One en route to Georgia. pic.twitter.com/unPZ7nrJU9— CSPAN (@cspan) April 29, 2021 Read original story Newsmax Anchor Accuses President Biden of Giving ‘Planted’ Dandelion to First Lady At TheWrap

North Korea on Sunday warned that the United States will face “a very grave situation” and alleged that President Joe Biden “made a big blunder” in his recent speech by calling the North a security threat. Last week, Biden, in his first address to Congress, called North Korea and Iran’s nuclear programs “serious threats” to American and world security and said he’ll work with allies to address those problems through diplomacy and stern deterrence. “His statement clearly reflects his intent to keep enforcing the hostile policy toward the DPRK as it had been done by the U.S. for over half a century,” Kwon Jong Gun, a senior North Korean Foreign Ministry official, said in a statement.
