To renew the tourism industry of Cebu City, the Cebu City Tourism Commission is earmarking the sites in different barangays that will be promoted as key tourist spots.
Jocelyn Pesquera, the Tourism Commissioner has explained that Cebu City is focusing on boosting up its tourism in mountain barangays, that has several tourist spots.
The commission at present is looking for waterfalls in Barangays Budlaan and Tagba-o.
Pesquera stated that the commission together with different agencies of the government is aiming to introduce canyoneering in Tagba-o.
“The falls are viable for tourism,” said Pesquera.
The commission, although, is giving importance to safety and the number of travelers going to the area, she said.
She said structures have to be in place to make sure that the spot is perfect for tourists where there should be restrooms and additional improvements in terms of safety measures. The two waterfalls have been open to the public.
“Only a few are familiar with these places. Mostly they are the residents of these barangays, too,” Pesquera said.
Pesquera suggested the ones who plan to visit the waterfalls to manage with the barangays so they can be guided in the right way. The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office have been training the tourist guides.
Also, she said that they are promoting flower gardens like the one in Barangay Sirao.
The tourism program of the commission in the mountain barangays is called the Highland Blooms and Eco Tourism.
Pesquera has mentioned that now the locals are the ones who are driving tourism amid the pandemic. She encouraged the public who visit tourist spots to maintain the health protocols.
“This time we are relying on the locals. And we encourage people to go outdoors to improve their mental health,” said Pesquera.
