Mamata to go to court over Nandigram counting

Kolkata, May 3 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee on Monday said she will go to court over Nandigram counting.

Addressing a meeting with party leaders at party headquarters here, Ms Banerjee alleged, the returning officer in Nandigram messaged her saying his life was under threat and the Election Commission (EC) didn't allow recounting.

The TMC supremo, who was single-handedly spearheaded her Trinamool Congress for the third consecutive term into the corridor of power, said she will go to court.

Defeating all odds, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by party supremo Mamata Banerjee , coasted to a comfortable and credible majority in West Bengal, won 213 seats, bettering its performance of 211 in the outgoing Assembly.



The Election Commission on Sunday rejected a TMC’s demand seeking recount of votes at Nandigram.

At first the EC declared Ms Baerjee had won by 1200 votes but later on altered and BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari won by 1,957 votes.

On Sunday, a TMC delegation led by Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’ Brien, Firhad Hakim, MP Kalyan Banerjee and Atin Ghosh met Chief Election Officer and submitted a letter seeking a recount of votes in Nandigram.

The TMC claimed in its letter that certain ‘preposterous’ and ‘illegal’ things have happened during the counting of votes in Nandigram and that's why the EC must order a recounting of votes.

She also refuted reports of violence, saying BJP is spreading old pictures.

The chief minister appealed to everyone to maintain peace and not indulge in any violence, stressed on Covid fight.

“I appeal to everyone to maintain peace and not indulge in any violence. We know BJP and Central Forces have tortured us a lot but we have to maintain peace. At present, we have fight COVID19,” Ms Banerjee said.

The chief minister declared all journalists as Covid warriors.

TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee will meet West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar at 7 pm, stake claim to form government.

The Governor has informed that Ms Banerjee, who mastered a two-third majority winning 213 seats out of 292 for which the elections held in eight-phased, would meet him at Rajbhawan at 7 pm today.

Ms Banerjee also said that the swearing ceremony of the government will also have in a small manner.
