Youngwood man jailed after police said he led them on 22-mile chase

May 3—A Youngwood man is behind bars after state police said he led troopers on a 22-mile chase over the weekend that began in Pittsburgh and ended in Hempfield, according to court papers.

Ryan E. McKnight, 36, did not have a valid drivers license, police said.

Troopers were traveling east on the Parkway East near the Squirrel Hill Tunnel at 1:30 a.m. Saturday when they spotted a Hyundai Tucson change lanes without signaling, according to court papers. The SUV pulled over briefly for a traffic stop before the tunnel then kept driving, police said.

The driver exited the highway onto Route 30, and troopers pursued him through a red light in East McKeesport.Spike strips placed at the intersection of Route 30 and Possum Hollow Road in Hempfield disabled three tires on the SUV. The vehicle stopped nearby at Route 30 and Lowry Avenue, where the driver attempted to run, according to court papers.

He was tazed and arrested, police said. Investigators seized a suspected piece of crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia, according to court papers.

Speeds during the reported chase reached as fast as 70 mph, police said. Authorities said McKnight appeared to be under the influence and he had blood drawn at a hospital before being lodged at the Westmoreland County Prison.

He is charged with driving under the influence, fleeing from police, driving on a suspended license and several other offenses. He is being held on $100,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is set for May 14.

McKnight was sentenced in July to one year in an intermediate punishment program in connection with a drug paraphernalia charge in Greensburg, according to online court records. He was sentenced in June to a jail term on a simple assault charge in Blair County court.

The foundation has over $51 billion in assets, according to a recent tax filing. In December, the couple announced a $250 million contribution to fight the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.Last year, Gates announced he was leaving Microsoft’s board to “dedicate more time to philanthropic priorities including global health and development, education, and my increasing engagement in tackling climate change.”The pair met at Microsoft—where Melinda was once an executive managing over 1,000 people—and were married on New Years Day in 1994 in Hawaii. Mr Gates, the 65-year-old founder of Microsoft and one of the world’s wealthiest men, posted a statement on Twitter revealing that he and wife Melinda made the decision after a “great deal of thought and work” and that they were entering the “next phase” of their lives. 'After a great deal of thought and a lot of work, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” it read. “Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives. 'We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue to work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.” The divorce of the famously charitable couple is likely to send shock waves through the worlds of philanthropy, public health and business. Their separation also leaves questions over the fate of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation - the world’s largest charitable organisation - which has donated tens of billions of dollars since it was formed in 2000. In the last year alone, the Gates Foundation made a contribution of $250 million to fight the Covid-19 pandemic and has focused on the development and distribution of vaccines around the world. It could also become one of the most expensive in history. Mr Gates is the fourth wealthiest man in the world and together the couple is worth an estimated $127 billion. Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder, split his $150billion fortune with his wife MacKenzie in 2019 after he was revealed to be having an affair with Lauren Sanchez. Bill and Melinda, 56, began dating in 1987 after meeting at a New York trade show. Mr Gates had founded Microsoft 12 years earlier and was already worth several billion dollars. When Bill, who is known to book out his day in five-minute slots, initially asked her out, inquiring if they could go out "two weeks from tonight." Melinda responded: “That’s not spontaneous enough for me." Melinda, a Texas-born daughter of an aerospace engineer and a housewife. went on to work at Microsoft as a project manager before she was appointed as General Manager of Information Products in the early 1990s. They married in a small and intimate wedding in Hawaii in 1994 and Melinda left Microsoft two years later to concentrate on starting a family. The couple have three children; Jennifer, 25, Rory, 21, and Phoebe, 18, each of whom is reportedly set to inherit $10 million with the rest going to charity. Melinda had said in interviews that the secret to their marriage was that she and Bill equally divided the running of their household. However, she wrote in her memoir "The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World" of the challenges their marriage faced. She talked candidly about her loneliness after the birth of first child Jennifer, with Bill working all hours of the day. “Great wealth can be very confusing," she wrote. "The way that I can keep myself best grounded is to, um, live out the family life that I want to live.” Both halves of the couple have consistently been ranked as one of the world's most powerful men and women by Forbes magazine. The couple led an early 21st century vaccination campaign which significantly contributed to the eradication of the wild poliovirus in Africa. Mr Gates stepped down from Microsoft’s board last year to focus on combatting the virus. He also sold the majority of his stake in Microsoft, retaining just over 1 per cent of shares.

SOPA Images/Light Rocket via Getty ImagesTwo vaccines – the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in the U.S. and the AstraZeneca vaccine in Europe – have been linked to an increased chance of a rare type of blood clot. Researchers are investigating what causes these clots and are starting to propose some answers. Dr. Mousumi Som, a professor of medicine at Oklahoma State University, explains what these rare clots are and how they are forming after people get vaccinated. 1. What are the blood clots? A small number of people in the U.S. have developed dangerous blood clots after receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The clots have mostly been occurring in people’s brains and, paradoxically, are associated with low platelet counts. Normally, platelets help a person stop bleeding when they get injured. If you get a cut or have an injury, the body responds by sending platelets which act as a temporary patch. The patch attracts other platelets and they stick together to stop blood loss. Since platelets normally help the clotting process, this combination of low platelets and extreme clotting makes these clots medically unusual. These specific types of clots – called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis – although rare, affect around two to five people per million per year and are potentially life-threatening without treatment. Vaccines aren’t normally a trigger for this kind of clot. 2. Who is having these clots? As of April 24, 2021, out of the 8 million people vaccinated with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in the U.S., about 16 people have developed these blood clots. The clots occurred from six to 13 days after immunization, and the majority were in women between the ages of 18 and 48. On April 26, 2021, news reports indicated that at least one man had developed a clot. The man is in his 30s and was hospitalized from a clot in his leg about two weeks after receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Health officials in Europe have also reported that the AstraZeneca vaccine – a COVID-19 vaccine authorized and approved in Europe but not in the U.S. – has caused about 200 cases of low-platelet clotting. Importantly, both the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and the AstraZeneca vaccine use a type of harmless virus called an adenovirus to deliver instructions to the human body on how to build an immune response to COVID-19. This is called a viral vector vaccine. The fact that the both vaccines use a viral vector and both are associated with blood clots has led many health experts to think that the clotting issues of the two vaccines may share the same mechanism. 3. Why are women getting more clots than men? At this point, doctors still don’t know what makes women more susceptible than men, nor what puts a person at risk for these clots. These clots can occur, though rarely, in people who don’t get a vaccine. Scientists know that women are three times more likely to develop this type of clot without receiving the vaccine. Many researchers think this is because of birth control or other hormonal replacements that women take. 4. Why might the vaccines be causing blood clots? Researchers believe that this specific low-platelet clotting is similar to a reaction some individuals get when they receive a blood thinner called heparin, called heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. Doctors sometimes use heparin to thin a person’s blood in the case of a heart attack or a blood clot when blood flow needs to be reestablished. But some people experience the opposite reaction, and their blood ends up clotting more instead. This happens because the body triggers an unwanted immune response after receiving heparin. In these patients, heparin attaches to a product released from platelets called platelet factor 4. When this happens, the immune system considers the combined platelet factor 4 and heparin a problem, so it creates antibodies in response. These antibodies attach to the heparin and platelet factor 4 complex, and the body – which now thinks it needs to repair an injury – causes more clotting while using up even more platelets. This results in the low platelet count seen in these patients. When doctors have looked at the blood of patients who developed clots after receiving the Johnson & Johnson or AstraZeneca vaccine, it looked very similar to the blood of people who have the low-platelet clotting reaction to heparin.
