Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday exuded confidence that the saffron party-led alliance will retain power in the state.
The ruling BJP-led NDA is surging ahead of the Grand Alliance spearheaded by the Congress in Assam, leading in 77 of the 119 seats, trends available on the Election Commission website at 12.15 pm showed.
"People have blessed us. We can say for sure that the BJP will form government in Assam. We are coming back to power with our partners AGP and UPPL," Sonowal told reporters.

According to news reports, a three-member Trinamool Congres delegation is meeting Chief Electoral Officer at EC Office in Kolkata seeking a recount of votes in Nandigram and other issues.
As of 8.45 pm, according the official EC website, Mamata Banerjee is leading in Nandigram with 84,004 EVM votes. However, her opponent, and TMC turncoat Suvendu Adhikari tweeted out thanking the people of Nandigram for choosing him as their representative. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "Congratulations to Mamata Didi for @AITCofficial's win in West Bengal. The Centre will continue to extend all possible support to the West Bengal Government to fulfil people’s aspirations and also to overcome the pandemic. @MamataOfficial". Mamata is all set to return as the Bengal CM for a third consecutive term.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also congratulated the TMC chief as the TMC is headed for a return to power in the state.
As per the latest result trends available on the EC website for the 292 of the 294 seats in Bengal, the TMC has won 34 and was ahead in 177 seats while the BJP has won six seats and is ahead in 73.
"I would like to thank my sisters and brothers of West Bengal who have blessed our party. From a negligible presence earlier, BJP’s presence has significantly increased. BJP will keep serving the people. I applaud each and every Karyakarta for their spirited effort in the polls," he said.
The All India Trinamool Congress has appealed to people to not speculate over the election result of the Nandigram constituency in West Bengal as counting of votes is still underway.
The party made the remark in a tweet, amid conflicting reports over who won the seat. While initial reports claimed Mamata as the winner, some reports have emerged claiming that Suvendu Adhikari has won the seat. As per the EC website, counting is still underway in the seat with Adhikari leading by a margin of 9,862 votes.
"Let the Nandigram people give whatever verdict they want, I accept that. I don't mind. We won more than 221 seats and BJP has lost the election," she said, addressing reporters after the TMC looked set to sweep the West Bengal polls with leads in 207 seats and wins in five seats.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi congratulated DMK chief MK Stalin as result trends showed the DMK and Congress well ahead of the majority mark.
"Congratulations to Shri MK Stalin for the victory. People of Tamil Nadu have voted for change and we will, under your leadership, prove to be a confident step in that direction. Best wishes," he said.
Earlier in the day, BJP leader Rajnath Singh too had congratulated Stalin for the party's stellar performance in the Assembly Election.
BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma won the Jalukbari Assembly constituency by a margin of over one lakh votes. Sarma has won a fifth consecutive term from the constituency.
The BJP leader had won the seat in the 2016 election by a margin of 85,935 votes.
Election strategist Prashant Kishor, who had claimed back in December that the BJP will struggle to cross double digits in the West Bengal assembly polls or else he will quit, Sunday announced he is "quitting this space". He also came down hard on the Election Commission, accusing it of being an "extension of BJP".
"I am quitting this space," he told India Today TV channel after trends showed a landslide victory for the TMC, the party whose election strategy he helped craft for the Assembly elections.
"I have never seen a more partial Election Commission, it did everything to help BJP... from allowing the use of religion to scheduling poll and bending rules, EC did everything to help the BJP," he said,
BJP national general secretary CT Ravi told CNN-News18 that the party has accepted public mandate with result trends showing the Congress-DMK alliance leading with 150+ seats in Tamil Nadu. "We have accepted the public's mandate," Ravi said.
As per the latest result trends, while the Congress-DMK alliance is leading in 151 seats, the incumbent AIADMK and BJP are ahead in 82 seats.
Kerala health minister KK Shailaja is leading by more than 61,000 votes at Mattannur, News18 reported. Revolutionary Socialist Party candidate Illikkal Augusthy was has emerged as the main challenger from the seat. Shailaja was lauded globally for her role in controlling the spread of during the first wave of the pandemic in the southern state.
The MNM's Kamal Haasan is leading from Coimbatore South with 24,275 votes, while TTV Dhinakaran of the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) is trailing by over 5,000 votes in Kovilpatti.
Ruling parties were poised to return to power in three states with Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress striding way ahead of the BJP in West Bengal while the BJP was comfortably ahead in Assam as was the LDF in Kerala, Election Commission trends indicated on Sunday.
According to the latest updates from the Election Commission, Suvendu Adhikari is leading with a margin of over 3,000 votes against Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram. The margin was earlier over 8,000 votes.
The ruling LDF maintained its lead in 88 of the 140 assembly constituencies in Kerala while the opposition Congress-headed UDF was ahead in 50 segments, as per trends available till 10.30 am

Exit polls have forecast a tight contest between the incumbent Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress and the BJP in the crucial West Bengal assembly polls and put the ruling saffron combine ahead in Assam
Counting of votes for 822 Assembly seats spread across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry will take place from 8 am today (Sunday, 2 May) following the protocols.
The election has been overshadowed by the raging COVID pandemic, as the BJP seeks to consolidate its hold over more states and Congress along with its allies attempts to regain turf.
There will be 2,364 counting halls as compared to 1,002 halls in 2016 in 822 assembly constituencies in view of the guidelines, according to the Election Commission which had drawn flak from the courts over the conduct of polls during the pandemic.
At least 15 rounds of sanitisation will be carried out at each centre, besides social distancing and other precautions, including a ban on gatherings, will be strictly followed during the counting by 95,000 officials, officials said.
They said counting of votes will begin at 8 am and continue late into the night. As many as 1,100 counting observers will watch the process and candidates and agents will have to produce a negative COVID test report or double dose of vaccination certificate to get an entry.
Exit polls have forecast a tight contest between the incumbent Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress and the BJP in the crucial West Bengal assembly polls and put the ruling saffron combine ahead in Assam while projecting that the Left alliance will retain Kerala, a feat unseen in four decades.
For the Congress, the exit polls predicted that it may fall short in Assam and Kerala and lose in Puducherry to the opposition alliance of AINRC-BJP-AIADMK.
The only good news for the Congress was from Tamil Nadu, where the exit polls predicted that the DMK-led opposition alliance, of which it is a part, will trounce the AIADMK-BJP coalition.
The poll results in the four states and the UT are also likely to reflect how the handling of the COVID pandemic has played on the voters' mind.
Polling was held in eight phases in West Bengal between March 27 and April 29, in Assam in three stages on March 27, April 1 and 6, while votes were cast in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry in a single phase on April 6, when the COVID surge had begun in many of the states.
Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are among the 11 states that account for 78.22 per cent of the total active cases, according to the Health ministry.
West Bengal will have the maximum number of 1,113 counting halls, Kerala 633, Assam 331, Tamil Nadu 256 and Puducherry 31, the EC said.
A three-tier security arrangement is in place in West Bengal's counting centres and 256 companies of central forces deployed across 23 districts of the state that voted in a gruelling election marred by violence and vicious personal attacks.
The result will decide whether Mamata Banerjee, who has been in power for 10 years and is arguably fighting the toughest poll of her political career, has been able to thwart the challenge by the battle-hardened election army of the BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
The BJP, which had just three seats in the 294-member Assembly after the polls and went to win 18 out of 42 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, had pulled out all the stops in the state in a determined bid to oust Banerjee, a vocal critic of Prime Minister Modi, and add another state to its tally of 17.
The Left-Congress alliance is the third main contestant in the state.
In Tamil Nadu, both Dravidian parties -- AIADMK and DMK -- went into the election without their stalwarts, J Jayalalithaa and M Karunanidhi.
Chief Minister K Palaniswami and his deputy O Panneerselvam will cement their position as successors of Jayalalithaa if the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham (AIADMK) retains power though it faces an uphill task especially after the rout in the 2019 Lok Sabha election when the DMK-led alliance won 38 out of 39 seats.
The AIADMK had scored successive wins in 2011 and in 2016, when Jayalalithaa bucked the anti-incumbency trend -- the first by anyone in nearly three decades in the state.
After a narrow defeat in the last assembly election where several exit polls had predicted his party's win, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief M K Stalin spearheaded a determined election campaign this time and vigorously toured the state to take on the ruling AIADMK.
AIADMK ally BJP, which had not won any seat in the last polls, is contesting in 20 constituencies. Another AIADMK ally PMK is contesting from 23 constituencies.
The Congress, an ally of the DMK, is in the fray in 25 Assembly segments.
Actor-politician Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam-led combine is also in the fray.
There are 75 counting centres across the state and all arrangements are in place to smoothly conduct the exercise, which would be monitored by observers, authorities said.
In Kerala, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) is seeking to break the state's four-decade-old trend of swinging between the communists and the Congress-led United Democratic Front.
As many as 957 candidates, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, 11 of his Cabinet colleagues, Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala, senior Congress leader Oommen Chandy, 'Metroman' E Sreedharan, former Union Minister K J Alphons and BJP State president K Surendran, among others, were in fray in the election to the 140 seats.
The BJP, which had won one seat in 2016, is confident of garnering more seats this time
The poll is significant for Kerala Congress (M) chief Jose K Mani who recently snapped decades-long ties with the UDF and joined hands with the Left front.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had camped in the state for several days and taken part in dozens of corner meetings and rallies, with the party hoping that the state will herald a turn in its electoral fortunes after a series of disappointments in recent years.
In Assam, the ruling BJP is facing a challenge from 'Mahajoth' or 'Grand Alliance' comprising the Congress, AIUDF, Bodoland Peoples' Front (BPF), CPI(M), CPI, CPI(ML) Liberation, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM).
The BJP has an alliance with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) and the Gana Suraksha Party (GSP),
The saffron party had scripted history by winning the traditionally Congress-dominated state in 2016, after remaining on the fringes.
In Puducherry, the AINRC-led NDA and the Congress-led Secular Democratic alliance are in a contest. While AINRC fielded candidates in 16 of the total 30 constituencies the BJP is contesting nine seats while the AIADMK is contesting five seats.
The Congress-led government in the Union Territory had collapsed just before the elections.
Counting will also be held in four Lok Sabha seats and 13 assembly seats across 13 states where bypolls were held.
The EC has banned victory roadshows and vehicle rallies.
