CHICAGO – Attempted murder charges have been filed against the driver of a pickup truck who allegedly drove onto a median because he was angered by the group of “yuppies with dogs” having a picnic in Chicago's Logan Square Saturday.

Tim Nielsen, 57, of the 2400 block of North Campbell Avenue, was charged with four counts of attempted first-degree murder, Chicago police announced in an email Monday morning.

Police said Nielsen was arrested soon after the attack, “after he intentionally jumped a curb in his vehicle and drove at a group of pedestrians gathered for a picnic.”

    A former RAF airman has received a landmark payout after his rare form of cancer was linked to the toxic fumes from an aircraft, as the Ministry of Defence faced accusations of a cover-up. Flight Sergeant Zach Stubbings, 42, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, having spent years flying RAF Sea King, a now retired helicopter where it is believed he inhaled toxic exhaust fumes. Last month Mr Stubbings, who served with the RAF for fifteen years, won a settlement from the MoD after a six-year legal battle. He was paid an undisclosed sum and claims the Government was aware of concerns regarding the aircraft's exhaust since 1999. It was subsequently retired in 2016. Mr Stubbings, from Cardiff, told The Sun: "The Government chose to ignore it. It’s a scandal." The Sea King aircraft was also flown by the Duke of Cambridge in 150 search-and-rescue operations over a three-year period, while Prince Andrew also flew the helicopter in The Falklands in 1982. Mr Stubbings was diagnosed with the cancer in 2012 and later medically discharged from the force. He described the diagnosis as a "huge knock". He said: "They thought I had an allergy to the new suits for work that we had been issued with but when the tests didn't come up with anything they did some blood screening. "I was up a tree on the high ropes course on a Friday afternoon when I got a phone call from the senior medical officer to say to go to the medical centre first thing on Monday. It sounded serious but I had no idea why they wanted to see me. "I had no symptoms so it was a real shock when they diagnosed cancer. It is a type of cancer that you are never in remission with but it can be active or non-active. "I have regular blood tests to keep on top of it but it did change my world completely. "I was an instructor at the time of diagnosis and had plans to further my career, but then I had to get moved to lighter duties and was discharged in 2015." It is not the first time the government has come under fire for the protection of military personnel. David Hill, a former avionics project manager at the MoD, published a book in April 2019 in which he accused the department of cost cutting to the detriment of personnel’s safety. He claimed the measures had contributed to fatal aircraft crashes and that Whitehall wasted money on procuring unnecessary items, which had a knock-on effect for safety training and equipment. At the time of the book's publication, the MoD said it "takes the safety of all personnel extremely seriously. To ensure that our equipment operates at the highest standards we put safety right at the heart of our procurement activities and in the event of a fatality or major loss of equipment a thorough independent investigation is undertaken by the Defence Safety Authority". Responding to Mr Stubbings' case, an MoD spokesperson said: "The health and safety of our personnel is of the utmost importance and we are committed to providing a safe working environment. Three studies undertaken by the RAF Centre of Aviation Medicine into Sea King found there were no definitive conclusions in terms of risk to health. RAF Sea King reached the end of service in 2016."
