HUBBALLI: Utilizing the time during lockdown, HDMC authorities have expedited civic works, mainly nala cleaning, ahead of the rainy season. They have also resumed other works including construction of open drains and catching of stray dogs in the twin cities.
The health department has started nala cleaning drive on a war footing on all major roads using JCBs and other vehicles. Also, the veterinary department has initiated a drive to catch stray dogs. In a week, more than 70 stray dogs have been caught.
Dr Ravi Saligoudar, veterinary department, HDMC, said, “Since day one of the second lockdown, we have resumed stray drive catching drive. There is hardly any movement of people on the roads, so it is easy to carry out the drive.”
The city has been receiving unseasonal rain since the past few days. Many commercial and residential areas are facing lots of problems due to clogging of open drains. Looking at the problem, HDMC officials have launched nala cleaning drive on all major roads and residential areas.
“During normal days it is quite difficult to carry out nala cleaning drive using machines and JCBs due to overcrowded roads and movement of vehicles. Now that the roads are free, work will be completed fast,” said an official.
Gurudatta Hegde, commissioner, HDMC, said, “I have issued orders to all officials to carry out regular civic works. As rain is about to start, all nalas need to be cleanes and also the other major works are to be finished. In this regard, officials are conducting civic works along with Covid works assigned to them. We expect to finish the works before June.”
