Indiana State Police are investigating a deadly shooting involving the Porter County Sheriff's Department.

- And new this morning as well, Indiana State Police are investigating a deadly shooting involving the Porter County Sheriff's Department. It happened last night in South Haven. Police say deputies responded to a disturbance and after several hours entered a home.

They say Alexander Tuzinski was holding a gun. At some point, he was shot and died of his injuries. The deputy's names have not been released.

Over the past thirteen years, three reports were published in Israel which identified the annual religious festival as a public health risk, raising questions as to whether police failed to ensure the venue was safe. A report by Israel’s state comptroller in 2008 said there had been a “systemic failure” to protect the Mount Meron site and worshippers, while a subsequent report in 2011 said it was not safe for mass gatherings. “The existing situation should not be allowed to continue, including the neglected structure where [certain] groups do as they wish, to the abandonment of a site of great importance, both nationally and religiously,” the report said, according to the Times of Israel. And in 2016 a police report said that the "writing was on the wall" in terms of the overcrowding risks at the annual Mount Meron festival, which was attended by 100,000 ultra-orthodox Jews this year. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the disaster was “one of the worst to befall the State of Israel.” Israeli police have launched an internal investigation into security measures at the festival, which may be followed by a state inquiry, according to Israeli media reports.

  • One scary way that Apple’s new AirTag trackers can be abused

    Even before Apple unveiled the AirTag tracker, we learned that the company had built protections into iOS 14.5 to prevent AirTag abuse. iOS will warn iPhone users when it detects an AirTag tracker following them around so that they can disable it and prevent stalkers from keeping track of their location. An AirTag that’s been away from the owner for three days will also make a sound when moved so that Android users could discover it as well. Apple also explained that the AirTags were not designed to track children or pets, and the privacy and security features above explain why it’s difficult to track people using AirTags. But a nonprofit dealing with violence against women has identified one situation where the AirTags can be used to track unsuspecting victims without triggering the protection that Apple has in place to prevent stalking. The National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) group has addressed tracking technologies like AirTag in an interview with FastCompany, explaining one scenario where Apple’s protections might fail. Apple has a support document where it details how AirTag tracking works and the security and privacy protections built into the Find My tracking service: AirTag has also been designed to discourage unwanted tracking. To discourage tracking without your knowledge, Find My will notify you if an unknown AirTag is seen moving with you over time. An AirTag that isn't with the person who registered it for an extended period of time will also play a sound when moved so you can find it, even if you don’t use an iOS device. If you detect an unknown AirTag, use the steps below to learn about the AirTag and how to disable it. Apple did not initially explain how quickly the AirTag “moving with you” alert might happen if you're an iPhone user who is being tracked with an AirTag, but the company told the blog that it would occur when you arrive at your home, which is the address you stored in your Apple “Me” card, or at specific locations that your phone learned you frequently visit. But this won’t work for Android users who might be tracked with an AirTag. They’ll only be notified that they might have an AirTag tracker on them after three days. NNEDV said that might be a problem for Android users who live with abusive spouses who might use AirTags to track their victims. “Three days won’t work if you’re going home every day to the same person tracking you... That’s a learning space [that] hopefully Apple will consider and work to build in protections with that threat model,” NNEDV technology safety specialist Corbin Streett told the blog. “[Apple] is thinking about the threat model where it’s a stalker who is walking by someone on the street they don’t know — that stranger danger model — but what about when it is the person you come home to every day?” Fast Company points out that Apple said in recent interviews that the three-day rule might be lengthened or shortened in the future.

And in many cases, these thyroid disease are treated with medication. But if you're taking one particular prescription drug for your thyroid, you could actually be compromising your health, according to a new nationwide recall. Acella Pharmaceuticals, LLC, has recalled NP Thyroid® nationwide. On Apr. 30, the FDA announced that Acella Pharmaceuticals, LLC, had voluntarily recalled a prescription thyroid medicine called NP Thyroid®, which is made of levothyroxine and liothyronine and is used for people with hypothyroidism. The company's 15-mg, 30-mg, 60-mg, 90-mg and 120-mg NP Thyroid® tablets have all been recalled.The medication was distributed nationwide to wholesalers, pharmacies, and healthcare offices."The products subject to recall are packed in 100-count and 7-count bottles," the notice says. The FDA announcement lists 35 100-count bottles, and three 7-count bottles among those recalled. The issue with the NP Thyroid® tablets is that they are not the correct potency. Routine testing found that the NP Thyroid® tablets contained less than 90 percent of the labeled amount of liothyronine (T3) and/or levothyroxine (T4)—which makes it less potent and therefore less effective."Patients being treated for hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), who receive sub potent NP Thyroid®, may experience signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)," the notice posted on the FDA's website warns. These include "fatigue, increased sensitivity to cold, constipation, dry skin, puffy face, hair loss, slow heart rate, depression, swelling of the thyroid gland and/or unexplained weight gain or difficulty losing weight."And for another sign your thyroid may be out of whack, If You Notice This With Your Eyes, Get Your Thyroid Checked, Doctors Say. Almost 50 serious adverse events potentially related to the thyroid medication have been reported. As of Apr. 30, 43 serious adverse events with a possible link to NP Thyroid® had been reported to Acella."There is reasonable risk of serious injury in newborn infants or pregnant women with hypothyroidism including early miscarriage, fetal hyperthyroidism, and/or impairments to fetal neural and skeletal development," the FDA notice explains.Additionally, elderly people and patients with underlying cardiac disease have an increased risk of "toxic cardiac manifestations of hyperthyroidism" when taking the recalled medicine, including cardiac arrhythmia, palpitations, and cardiac pain.And for more things to take out of your medicine cabinet, If You Have These Supplements at Home, the FDA Says "Destroy Them". Patients taking NP Thyroid® should not stop taking it without contacting their doctor. Acella is working to notify anyone they've shipped the medication to to stop distribution of the NP Thyroid® tablets in question.     The Biden administration denied a report from Iranian state TV on Sunday that the U.S. and U.K. agreed to exchange billions of dollars for American and British prisoners held in Iran. State TV quoted an anonymous Iranian government official laying out the terms of the alleged deal on Sunday. “The Americans accepted to pay $7 billion and swap four Iranians who were active in bypassing sanctions for four American spies who have served part of their sentences,” the official said in comments quoted in on-screen crawl, translated by the Associated Press. “Unfortunately that report is untrue there is no agreement to release these four Americans,” White House chief of staff Ron Klain told CBS’s Face the Nation immediately following the report. The U.S. State Department also denied the claim of a prisoner swap. “Reports that a prisoner swap deal has been reached are not true,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement. “As we have said, we always raise the cases of Americans detained or missing in Iran. We will not stop until we are able to reunite them with their families.” Iran is currently holding four known American prisoners: Baquer and Siamak Namazi; Iranian-American businessman Emad Shargi; and conservationist Morad Tahbaz. It is unclear which Iranian citizens held in the U.S. would be returned to Iran as part of the alleged deal. The alleged prisoner swap would also see the U.K. pay 400 million pounds in exchange for the release of British-Iranian Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a former employee at the Thompson Reuters Foundation.
