Nagaland SDMA forecasts rain in Nagaland

Kohima, May 02 (UNI) The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has forecast that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are expected to hit the state this current week.

In a press release issued by the OSD of NSDMA Johnny Ruangmei said that in coordination with the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati issued weather updates that the monsoon rains have been deficient for the state by about 60pc this season between March 01 to May 01, however, rain and thundershowers accompanied with lightning is expected in the coming week especially during late evening and night hours and pre-monsoon activity is expected to pick up during this period.
It said that the second half of this period is expected to get more intense than the former while adding that rain during this period is likely to reduce the margin of rainfall deficiency caused so far. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind with wind speeds of 30 to 40 KMPH are very likely to occur in Peren, Dimapur, Kohima, Phek, Wokha, Zunheboto, Kiphire, Mokokchung, Tuensang, Mon and Longleng from May 02 to 05.

It further said that the state capital Kohima is likely to witness thunderstorm almost daily and the maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 25 degrees and 15 degrees at most locations except Dimapur where the maximum temperature could rise up to 30 degrees, the NSDMA said. The second half of this period is expected to get more intense than the former and rain during this period was likely to reduce the margin of rainfall deficiency caused so far.

The NSDMA also urged the public to exercise caution to avoid any eventualities during this period. It also requested all the District Disaster Management Authorities and other line Departments to any emergencies caused by natural calamities and to be on alert to save lives and properties during this monsoon period.
