West Bengal: BJP surges, but fails to match its 2019 Lok Sabha performance

NEW DELHI: The BJP would be disappointed with the results in West Bengal where it led a high-octane campaign to unseat Mamata Banerjee.
While the party has managed a phenomenal jump from 3 seats in 2016 assembly to over 80 seats in 2021, the number is well short of what the BJP must have hoped for, especially after its spectacular performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in the state.
According to the available trends, there was a dip in BJP's performance in as many as 36 assembly segments compared to its leads in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
However, this dip in assembly elections vis-à-vis the 2019 Lok Sabha elections is part of a trend that the party has faced since 2014.
The party's journey in Indian politics since 2014 is a story of phenomenal highs in Lok Sabha elections interspersed with some ordinary performances in the assembly elections.
From 2014 to 2019, the party scripted history in national politics by returning to power at the Centre with a greater majority.
However, after stamping its authority in the Lok Sabha elections, the party failed to replicate its performance in some of the assembly elections.
