The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led coalition will return to power in Tamil Nadu after a 10-year gap. However, counting is still underway in Tamil Nadu as results for 124 seats are not yet in. The majority mark in the 234-seat Tamil Nadu Assembly is 118.

At 12.40 am on Monday, the MK Stalin-led party and its allies had either won or were ahead in 158 seats.

The DMK alone was either leading or had won 133 seats, paving way for a clear majority. The Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist) had both won one seat each and were leading in another. The Indian National Congress had won five seats and leading in 12, while another ally Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi had bagged two seats and were leading in two more.

In the opposite camp, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which was in power in the state for the past 10 years, was leading in 45 seats and had won 24, while the Bharatiya Janata Party and Pattali Makkal Katchi had won one each and were leading in three each.

Tamil Nadu elections were held in a single phase on April 6.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami was ahead in his home constituency of Edappadi in Salem district, with a margin of nearly 32,000 votes. The trailing candidate was DMK’s Sambhathkumar T.

Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam who was leading in Bodinayakanur in Theni district by a small margin earlier, had extended his margin to nearly 8,000 votes. The trailing candidate was Thangatamilselvan of the DMK. In 2016, the deputy chief minister had won this seat with a margin of 15,608 votes.

Meanwhile, Stalin was leading in Kolathur against AIADMK’s Aadirajaram with a margin of nearly 23,000 votes. His son Udhayanidhi Stalin, who contested an election for the first time, won the Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni seat by 69,355 votes.

Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan, who also made his political debut in this election, lost the Coimbatore (South) by a margin of 1,728 votes. BJP’s Vanathi Srinivasan was the wining candidate.

Under the leadership of Stalin, the DMK had a stellar performance in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, with its coalition winning 38 of the 39 seats. The DMK alliance had also bagged 13 of the 22 seats during bye-polls, as opposed to AIADMK-led coalition’s nine seats.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Stalin saying that the Centre and state government would work together.

Puducherry

The alliance led by All India NR Congress will assume power in Puducherry. Results for all seats are in. The majority mark in the Puducherry Assembly is 16. The Union Territory had voted in a single phase on April 6.

The All India NR Congress had won 10 of the seats, while its ally BJP had bagged six seats. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the other party in the alliance, did not win any seat.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had won six seats, while the Congress had won two seats.

Six Independent candidates also won.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the electorate for “blessing the NDA [National Democratic Alliance]. “We are humbled to serve the people and fulfil their dreams,” he said. “Our karyakartas [workers] made outstanding efforts to work among the people and elaborate on our agenda of good governance.”

Former Puducherry Chief Minister and AINRC President N Rangasamy lost in Yanam constituency by 655 votes against Independent leader Gollapalli Srinivas Ashok. In Thattanchavady, another constituency where Rangasamy contested from, he won by 5,456 votes.

Former Congress leader A John Kumar, who joined the BJP before the polls, won by 7,229 votes in the Kamaraj Nagar constituency.
