It was the highest daily toll this year for the state and Chennai, with 42 deaths, recorded the highest daily toll since the pandemic began last year. This has taken the state’s death toll to 14,046. The state recorded 18,692 new cases which pushed active cases to 1,15,128 and the total confirmed infections to 11,66,756. At least 35 of the 37 districts in the state recorded more than 100 new cases while 27 districts recorded deaths. Ranipet had the second highest number of deaths at 12, followed by Salem (10). Doctors, medical care to reach those in home isolation in Chennai
Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will soon deploy its medical staff, including doctors and nurses, to visit Covid-19 patients in home isolation, GCC commissioner G Prakash said on Friday. The civic body has hired 120 doctors, 100 nurses and lab technicians on a one-year contract and as many as 200 doctors who were working in Amma mini clinics have also been deployed for Covid-related work. “Around 65%-70% of active Covid-19 cases in Chennai are in home isolation. They will need quality medical care,” Prakash said. The medical staff will be given pulse oximeter and other equipment. GCC is also creating a 1,000-bed Covid care centre (CCC) at Chennai Trade Centre which will have oxygen supply for 860 beds.

People hire agents to stand in queue for Remdesivir
As queues get longer at Remdesivir counters at Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital, people are paying agents and locals about ₹500- ₹1,500 a day to stand in for them to get the drug. Nanganallu resident Muthulingam R*, who tested positive for Covid-19 along with five other family members, said they had no choice but pay a local and send all the proof with him to buy the drug. “One of us is admitted to hospital and requires this drug. The southern region recorded 3,458 new cases, with all 10 districts recording more than 100 cases each, pushing its active cases to 22,028. The central region had 1,571 new cases and 9,992 active cases.
The eight districts in west TN added 3,739 new cases taking active cases to 23,256 in the region. Except for The Nilgiris, which had 58 new cases, the other districts in the west had more than 200 fresh cases each and the region recorded 17 deaths due to the infection.
While the remaining northern districts added 1,886 fresh infections. The state’s northern districts, including the Chennai region have 59,845 people now fighting the infection — 52% of the total active cases in the state.
The city and its three neighbours — Kancheepuram, Chengelpet, Tiruvallur — which together recorded 8,038 new infections, now have 47,881people under treatment. This makes for nearly 41% of active cases in TN.
After Chennai, the most number of active infections are in Chengelpet (8,087), Tiruvallur (5,564), Coimbatore (6,943), Madurai (4,207) and Kancheepuram (3,008).
With 5,473 people testing positive and 31,222 active infections, Chennai continued to be the hotspot. Chengelpet recorded 1,215 fresh cases — second highest, followed by Coimbatore with 1,113.
The new cases include 583 people aged under 12 years and 27 people who arrived from other states on the road.
