    Carmakers postpone new launches amid devastating surge in Covid-19 cases

    Auto makers were betting on new launches, particularly of sports utility vehicles (SUVs) to drive demand

    Synopsis

    Car makers say the time is not right for the launch of a new product as retail sales have plunged in many markets and production has been stalled to ease oxygen supply constraints. The launch of at least six cars has been postponed. These include Hyundai Alcazar, Skoda Octavia, Mercedes GLA, Isuzu MUX, Isuzu D-Max V-Cross and Audi e-tron.

    A devastating surge in Covid-19 cases in India and the harsher restrictions imposed by an increasing number of states to reduce the risk of contagion have forced several car makers to put on hold car launches planned for April, May and June.
