Mumbai teacher drives car rickshaw to ferry COVID-19 patients free

Mumbai: Amid the devastating second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, a schoolteacher in Mumbai came forward to coronavirus patients by providing a rickshaw service from hospital to home and vice versa free of charge.

Dattatraya Sawant, a teacher by profession, drives the car rickshaw herself and offers a free ride to COVID-19 patients while taking all precautions, such as wearing a PPE kit, sanitation, and others.

Sawant, who lives in the vicinity of Ghatkopar, is an English teacher at the Dnyansagar Vidya Mandir school.

Taking into account the increasing number coronavirus patients across the state, Sawant has been providing free services in northeastern Mumbai for the past few days.

‘I fall off corona patients to Covid Care center and hospital free of charge, and also bring deceased patients out of hospital and Covid Center to their respective homes, ”Sawant told ANI.

He has so far traveled for free up to 26 COVID-19 patients and his work is appreciated at all levels.

‘I personally take all precautions for this. At the moment the number is corona patients are increasing rapidly. Many of them die due to untimely treatment. In such situations, whether the poor patients receive government assistance in a timely manner or not, private ambulances are not affordable. And often public vehicles do not provide services Covid patients. In such cases, my free service will be available to the patients, ”he said.

Sawant further said that this service will continue as long as the COVID-19 wave continues.
Many people offer financial aid to Sawant. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) has announced that it will spend the full fuel cost for its rickshaw.
