Chandigarh, April 30

The CBI has filed a chargesheet against Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Chandigarh Police Harbhajan Singh, who was arrested on charges of taking bribe from an Indian Air Force employee on February 16.

The complainant, Dharampal, a resident of Lalru, had alleged that Harbhajan Singh demanded Rs 10,000 bribe from him and threatened to implicate him in a false case if he failed to do so.

Dharampal had told the Central investigating agency that in May 2018 he took a loan of Rs 3,20,000 from a finance company in Sector 32, Chandigarh, for the marriage of his son.

Dharampal said he paid regular installments to the company till October 2020, but since they did not provide him any receipt for the payments he stopped paying future installments.

On receiving the complaint from the company, the ASI called Dharampal to meet him and allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 for not registering a case against him.

Based on Dharampal’s complaint, CBI sleuths laid a trap and caught the ASI while taking the bribe from Dharampal near Nirman Cinema in Sector 32.

The CBI then registered a case Harbhajan Singh under different Sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. However, he was later given bail by the court. — TNS
