CHENNAI:
Greater Chennai Corporation commissioner G
Prakash on Saturday presented a strong case for why people should get the Covid-19
vaccine as soon as its available.
Of the 60,000-70,000 frontline workers in the city including healthcare staff, police and
GCC staff, currently only 619 have contracted the infection.
He said 90% of the frontline staff had been vaccinated. No GCC employee had died in the second wave, Prakash said, adding that three cops had died so far.
In comparison, 26 GCC employees had died in the first wave, Prakash said.
"The main reason for such a reduced mortality as well as reduced infection in the second wave is due to vaccination," he said.
Prakash said of the 150 journalists who had taken the RT-PCR test as per the Election commission guidelines to cover the counting activities, only one had tested positive. This was also highlighted as a success of the vaccination drive.
The GCC has been vaccinating journalists under the frontline workers category since March.
