California man accused of ramming cars on NM 14
Apr. 30—SANTA FE — A California man led Santa Fe Sheriff's Office deputies on a high-speed chase up and down N.M. 14 Thursday afternoon, almost hitting deputies numerous times and crashing into multiple vehicles.
Jarrick E. Denewiler, 41, of Blythe, California, is facing 27 charges related to the chase that reached speeds of 110 mph. Charges include aggravated assault upon a peace officer, aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, criminal damage to property, reckless driving and driving while intoxicated.
A woman called law enforcement to report that a red Nissan Pathfinder was ramming into the back of her car while driving down N.M. 14, according to court documents.
A responding deputy had to veer into a field because Denewiler tried to crash into them. More deputies arrived and Denewiler continued to lead them on a high-speed pursuit, reaching speeds of 110 mph, court documents say.
At one point, a deputy tried to lay out spike strips and Denewiler swerved and tried to hit the officer, charging documents say. During the chase, Denewiler reportedly crashed into three cars traveling along N.M. 14, causing thousands of dollars in damage.
The chase alternated between going south and north on N.M. 14, ending near N.M. 599 and Interstate 25 just outside Santa Fe city limits.
Deputies were able to use a second spike strip to deflate the tires and a pursuit intervention technique, or PIT maneuver, to stop Denewiler. He was pulled from the vehicle and allegedly was holding a knife, which he later dropped, when officers approached him.
Denewiler told officers he consumed cocaine and PCP, according to court documents, and was also combative with deputies during his arrest.
Denewiler was taken to Prebyterian Hospital in Santa Fe for a blood draw for controlled substances before being booked into the Santa Fe County jail, where he is being held without bond.
