At least 18 people killed in fire accident at Covid hospital in Gujarat

There were about 50 patients at the four- storied Patel Welfare Hospital when the fire broke out in the COVID-19 ward.

In Gujarat, at least 18 persons including 16 Covid patients died after a fire broke out at a hospital in Bharuch early this morning.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani have expressed condolences over the incident. In a tweet, Mr Modi said he is pained by the loss of lives.

Eyewitnesses said that about 16 Covid patients in ICU ward died on the spot.

Two nurses of the hospital were also killed in this incident. According to the sources, the short circuit or oxygen leakage are believed to be the cause of the fire incident.

However, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has sent two senior IAS officers to the spot for further investigation.

He also indicates judicial inquiry into this incident. Fire was controlled within hours. Patients rescued from the incident have been admitted in nearby hospitals.

Gujarat government has announced Rs. 4 lakh cash compensation to the keen of each diseased in this fire incident from the Chief Minister’s relief fund.
