MUMBAI: Following the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education’s decision to cancel SSC examinations, teachers have demanded that the government find a way to return the examination fees collected from students.

Over 17 lakh students appear for the board exams each year. Students pay Rs 415 as examination fees. There is a late fee imposed for each day of delay in filling the form. Earlier this month, the board announced the SSC examinations will be cancelled and an alternative assessment format will be announced instead. “The board collects about Rs 80 crore as examination fees. It will not be spending on stationery and other logistics required for an offline examination. The government must find a way to return the money to the students now that the exam is cancelled,” said Rajesh Pandya, vice-president of the Teachers’ Democratic Front.

A board official, however, said question papers were printed and other preparations were underway when the exams were called off.
