Emergency services workers are searching for a teenage girl who is suspected to have drowned while on a school trip to East London.
National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) crew members were alerted to a drowning in progress at the Palm Springs Holiday Resort, near East London, on Thursday afternoon.
"On arrival on the scene, a search commenced for a 15-year-old female learner reported to have gone missing in the surf line after being swept out to sea by rip currents while swimming with fellow learners," NSRI East London spokesperson Geoff McGregor said.
The girl is from Dutywa in the Eastern Cape. She was at the resort with around 30 other pupils as part of an educational group outing.
"Despite an extensive search, there remains no sign of the missing teenager. Police K9 search and rescue, police divers and local police are continuing with an ongoing search operation," McGregor said.
