Arrest made in attempted robbery at Joplin convenience store

Apr. 30—Police nabbed a suspect in an attempted robbery of a convenience store Wednesday night on the south side of Joplin.

Capt. Will Davis said in a news release that a man armed with a knife entered the Kum & Go convenience store at 5002 S. Main St. shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday, grabbed a clerk by the arm and demanded money from the register.

Davis said the clerk broke free and fled, causing the suspect to leave the store and get in a vehicle with a female driver who headed north on Main Street. Police located the vehicle and stopped it near 27th and Main streets and took both into custody.

Robert S. Castro, 24, of Joplin, was identified as the would-be robber and charged Thursday in Newton County Circuit Court with first-degree attempted robbery and armed criminal action.

The driver of the car, Madison L. Shores, 22, of Carthage, was charged in Jasper County Circuit Court with a felony count of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and misdemeanor counts of driving while intoxicated and possession of marijuana.

In an interview with the BBC, she insisted Scotland would be a “thriving, prosperous, successful” independent country and said it already “pays its way” as part of the UK, despite significantly higher levels of public spending north of the border. However, she struggled to explain how a sovereign Scottish state could respond to major future crises with policies such as quantitative easing under her own separation plan. The Bank of England has pumped hundreds of billions of pounds into the UK economy through the large-scale purchase of Government bonds to support the economy since the onset of the coronavirus crisis. However, Ms Sturgeon currently proposes continuing to use the pound after independence, meaning Scotland would have no say over monetary policy, before establishing its own central bank and currently at an undefined point in the future. After being told it was “a fact” that this meant an independent Scotland would not be able to deploy its own quantitative easing policy to deal with “another huge emergency”, Ms Sturgeon said she would only set out specifics ahead of a future independence vote, which she hopes to hold by 2023. A Scottish central bank could be set up in a “transition period”, she claimed. She added: “We would be within Sterling until we did that and we would have the ability to exercise those functions of an independent country. “But, look, we will set out as we did in 2014, all of the case for independence as we come to ask people to make that choice, yes or no to independence. “Scotland will take the decision based on all of the information about whether it is better to have control over our own future, to have the levers of decision making in our own hands... or whether it is better to have what we have experienced over the last few years of having decisions imposed upon us.”
