Farmers Are Bringing Mangoes Directly To Your Table

The pandemic threatens to ruin the mango season for farmers for the second straight year. Growers across the Konkan region of Maharashtra rely on traders and exporters to sell their produce. But Covid-19 has again disrupted this supply-chain.

Some growers and farm co-operatives have taken it upon themselves to try and find buyers for the produce. Global Kokan is one such collective. The trust has set up 20 stores across Maharashtra, which remain open from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. in keeping with Covid-19 protocols in the state.

It has also created a tech platform called 'MyKo' to take orders from across the globe. MyKo, claiming to be the first-ever farmers' startup, supports #farmertohome initiative that offers training on cultivation, harvesting, grading and packaging.

India is among one of the largest mango exporters in the world, and Europe one of the most coveted markets—for the Alphonso variety in particular. Sanjay Yadavrao, Global Kokan founder and chairman, said they aim is to export 50,000 boxes to Europe this year.
