LUCKNOW: As cases once again climbed up to 35,000 in UP as a result of increased testing on Thursday, the government declared that the weekend curfew will be extended by a day.
The curfew will now be in place from 8pm on Friday to 7am on Tuesday.
The decision was taken, said a government spokesperson, as the weekend curfew had been successful in bringing down the number of daily positive cases.
The state government had initially imposed a night curfew in the state, followed by a curfew on Sundays and then, on April 20, converted it into a weekend curfew.
Meanwhile, night curfew has also been imposed across the state for all days of the week, from 8pm to 7am.
The Allahabad high court had ordered the UP government to impose a weeklong lockdown in a few districts which had a high number of cases.
The government successfully challenged the order in the Supreme Court, saying that along with saving lives, its aim was to also save livelihoods.
