Raw bombs hurled at Kolkata polls

Kolkata: Raw bombs were hurled in front of Mahajati Sadan in central Kolkata on Thursday morning while elections were taking place in the area, police said.

The incident took place in Central Avenue in the heart of the city, and they caused panic among the people.

BJP’s Jorasanko candidate Meena Devi Purohit claims the raw bombs were thrown at her vehicle as she toured various polling stations.

‘Bombs were thrown at my car, but I’m not scared. I will definitely visit the huts, ”she said.

“They tried to kill me and it’s a ploy to scare the voters,” Purohit claimed.

A large police contingent has been deployed on the spot, a senior Kolkata police officer said.

Evidence was gathered and an investigation was launched, he said.

Seven seats in Kolkata, including Jorasanko, were elected in the final phase of the West Bengal elections.

Voting started at 07:00 and will last until 18:30.
